If I hadn't been stuck on a plane for a couple hours I probably would not have finished it. The writing is good and I don't tend to have too big of an issue with unlikeable main characters, I'm actually starting to really like them and find them really interesting to read about normally, but this time it was a little tiring and a lot of times I had to cringe at some things.
Overall just not really for me, I guess.

First world white girl problems. Not a single likable character in the book.

I knew nothing of this book going into it. As someone who has been both depressed and suicidal most of their life, as well as someone who knows everything's relative, I still found this book to be completely trash and almost insulting (bigotry aside).

...

Upon further reflection, this is one of the worst books I've ever read.

if I had to describe the book in just a phrase, i’d say that it’s a challenging test on your emotions. I felt many different ways reading this book, that sometimes feel like I want to put it down and other times like I had to keep reading. Removing the obvious 1960s showing here, this book is what I would describe as almost perfect book, I still don’t fully understand the ending, but the entire book made me feel a certain way that I don’t think ive ever experienced before. A Must-Read

A difficult and somewhat boring read. The second half is a lot more interesting than the first, however, in the entire first half of this book I was waiting for the events of the second half and they ended up falling flat. This book made me sad. Specifically, Esther made me sad, especially since learning that this book was semi-autobiographical. I really wish I enjoyed it more. I listened to the audiobook version narrated by Maggie Gyllenhaal and I think she does a fantastic job.

one of the most insightful and incredibly revealing books i have ever read. esther's devolution is so subtle and then abrupt, and the way plath frames it is superbly relateable. absolutely this is a multiread book, but i would not recommend it to those struggling witha cceptance of their own illnessess.
