The Bell Jar accurately portrays mental health struggles and does so interestingly through its pacing. The storytelling is tangential, distracted, and convoluted at times, there are many sub-stories and recollections of the past that brings you out of the story completely, just to rip you back to the reality of the moment. I found this style of writing to be beneficial to the character development, but not as engaging to read.

Despite this being a story about mental health and suicide, Plath maintains poetic and comedic language, making it an enjoyable read rather than a depressing one.

I couldn’t help but think of the social understanding or tolerance towards mental health and Suicide when reading The Bell Jar, when this book was written and first came out, Suicide was more taboo than it is now, I assume this made the mundane story more interesting at the time. To me it was relatable and something I was uncomfortably numb to.

This book is outdated and a bit racist, no question there, and follows a story of an upper middle class white woman. There’s room for improvement!

This is a gorgeous, gorgeous book. It was a tough read for me mentally and emotionally, but a truly superb novel.

While I can value a novel about the madding nature of the expectations and restrictions society places on women, my appreciation for The Bell Jar stops there. A lovely fig tree metaphor cannot make up for the derogatory characterisations that plague this book, especially given it was written in the middle of the civil rights movement. Perhaps I have simply read this novel too late to appreciate its significance because I cannot help but think of the many other writers who manage to explore mental distress, misogyny, suicide, and institutionalisation without succumbing to racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, and so on. I simply cannot see myself in a story that fails to see the humanity in me.

This is my third time reading the Bell Jar and my first time reading it while I'm in a mentally good place. The writing style is as beautiful as I remember, and I appreciate gross details and weird characteristics in protagonists. However, I was struck by how Esther shows ZERO empathy for other characters. The book is extremely racist for the time period. It also has basically every other -ist and -phobia you could imagine. Considering that she's basically a stand-in for Plath herself, it made me like the book a lot less. The afterword mentions that Plath wanted to emphasise how you see everyone as a caricature when you're mentally unwell, which I understand to some extent. However, Esther is continuously judgemental and nasty throughout the book, both before she becomes unwell and after she recovers. Interesting how so many people idolise Sylvia Plath when she had such backwards attitudes to anyone who wasn't a thin, attractive, white Anglo-saxon protestant.

I think Sylvia plath knows my life exactly. I don't think I've ever read my own thoughts and feelings be explained so beautifully and precisely like Plath does. Her writing is so vibrant and poetic, even when she is discussing some very heavy topics. Its amazing that she was able to discuss the female experience so ruthlessly in the time that she did. Its insane that this book from years ago is the first ive read with passages that have made me feel so seen and understood in a way i havent felt before. I think this book found me at both the best and worst time, either way I know it's stuck with me for life.
