Oh gosh do I love Scott Pilgrim! This is in the realm of what I aspire to write. Definition of best thing ever.
Who knew that finding love would be like a video game? Scott is a lovable 20-something with a regular life with his best friend and a new girlfriend. However, he begins to have a few dreams that have a girl who he starts to be infatuated with. She turns out to be real, and named Ramona, and they quickly become something romantic but Scott is faced with the wrath of something stylish: an evil ex.
From start to finish, you'll be won over with Scott's story that has such stylish comic book panache. Everything from the characters, story and art style puts it all together near perfectly. While it was only the first level, I can't wait to see Scott in more geeky escapades. A (100%/Outstanding)

Maybe graphic novels aren't my thing? But props for the setting being Toronto!
This was a really enjoyable, and FAST read. The comic book style, Toronto setting, snarky sense of humor and interesting balance of real-life situations side by side with fantasy elements is great and made it really fun.
This particular volume sets up the story, introduces the main characters and doesn't really get involved with too much action until the end. This will definitely leave the reader wanting to continue with the rest of the series. I know I will be reading them.

I traded reads with one of my friends. I gave him Eleanor and Park; he gave me his Scott Pilgrim series. This is the only one I’ve gotten through so far, and I’m not a big fan.
I just don’t like Scott. Not a fan of the fact that he has a high school girlfriend whom he doesn’t treat very well. Am I supposed to find this charming? Unique? Relatable? I don’t know. I’ve been told that there is some major character development as the series progresses, which is fantastic, because Scott Pilgrim is an asshole. The saving grace is his super gay roommate. I love that guy.
The high school girlfriend thing is one I can’t get past. He is dating this precious girl, Knives, who is still a teenager. Our good friend Mr Scott Pilgrim is in his twenties. I’m all good with age gaps, as long as it’s legal and whatnot, but these people are in two different stages of life. Sort of, anyway. Scott is incredibly immature and doesn’t seem to be doing anything earth-shattering, so maybe the high-school scene suits him still. Either way, he should know better than to cheat on his young, growing, impressionable teenage girlfriend. Cheating is disgusting no matter the age gap or the maturity, and we’re supposed to find this character… what, charming? Funny???? I don’t get it. It’s not cute, sorry. And it’s all for a girl he doesn’t really know, but is curious about.
It seems like a very silly graphic novel. Maybe that’s all it’s supposed to be, or maybe I’m missing something. I haven’t gotten very far, to be fair. Perhaps this just isn’t my favorite genre?? Am I being unfair to this series? Probably. As I mentioned, I haven’t read them all. I just did not particularly enjoy this first book. I was bored, confused (sometimes), and annoyed. It didn’t even get interesting until near the end, when they go to a party and the ex-boyfriend shows up out of nowhere. BUT that’s just me. I know that this is a series loved by many; I could just very well be the wrong audience. Either way, I am slightly concerned for the young boys and girls reading this and thinking that Scott is just some ordinary fella, cheating on a nice girl and acting like a piece of lazy trash. I think it’s supposed to be funny, which makes it worse.

This comic was ok. I've heard a lot of hype about it (especially after the movie) so maybe I had it worked up in my head but I just didn't think it was all that great. I think the style of humor just doesn't mesh well with what I like. I just feel like it's trying to hard to be quirky and funny which is annoying to me.
Still though, the plot was interesting enough and the humor not too off putting so I'll probably continue on with the rest of the graphic novels at some point.

I flew through this and am so excited to read the rest!
The movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was based on this book. I absolutely loved the movie. Am not really in to graphic novels (though I did read Persepolis and I read Sandman in college like everyone else, er, all the other nerds), but wanted to see the source material.
5/6/11 update -
I finished this book, and I'm still not in to graphic novels. In a nutshell, if you like graphic novels, you'll probably enjoy it. Definitely worth checking out of the library and reading, just to see. It just didn't compute for me and I think empirically the movie is so much better. So far (this is vol 1 in a series that the movie was based on) it's stayed very true to the movie, both in plot and in certain visual aspects (locations, haircuts, clothing). But after seeing the dazzling visuals of the movie, the black and white drawings of the book seem a little sad. I'm sure if I'd read the book first, I'd feel differently.

3.5. The dialogue and actions went by really fast and topics kept changing. I'll read the rest of them, but the pace was a bit...odd for me I guess?
