The Flip Side

The Flip Side follows Josh, a recent dumpee, who feels like he is stagnating having made all the wrong choices. From now on, he’s going to make all of his choices by flipping a coin. What could go wrong, right?

This book sounded super fun and I was in need of a light-hearted read, and sure enough I finished it very quickly! However, it didn’t really deviate from the standard romcom book pattern that I’ve read so much of before - the most annoying thing about these kind of books is that the side characters are often there just for the lead character to have someone to talk to, and have no storyline of their own. I mean, he has a best friend called Jake who attends Beyonce dance classes - I wanna know about him! I also didn’t really get the chemistry between the two lead characters - it wasn’t fiery chemistry in any sense, but having said that it was super cute, and will make you smile.

So overall, I did enjoy reading it, but it was your predictable romance read so I struggled to rate it any higher - however if you like a fluffy romcom, this one is right up your alley!

Did I enjoy this? Sure.
Was it life-changing? No.

This was definitely more com than rom and then just a story about a man trying to find his way back? I feel like I have a lot of things to pick apart with this one, but overall I still really enjoyed it. The romance didn’t necessarily do it for me, but if you need a good laugh, this one’s got you!

*CW: death of a family member, brief mention of cancer

I found the main character Josh to be supremely annoying and selfish. The way he treats his friends and family is trash, and his whole personality is centered around being a guy who bought into the manic pixie dreamgirl dream. The big conflict felt pretty predictable to me.

1.5 stars rounded up because I stopped listening to the audiobook about halfway through and skimmed to the last few pages of the ebook to see what happens. It was exactly what I thought would happen and I hated it lol.

This book is not it for me. It opens with the MMC complaining about the audacity of his now ex girlfriend turning down his proposal after the money he spent on it. I hoped it would get better but it has cute romcom energy with this guy deciding to effectively stalk a woman around Europe after deciding she must be the one. I had to tap out. Other people enjoy this but if I want red flags there is dark romance, I don’t want massive red flags in cute romcoms.

Lovely book to relax with. I liked the friendships in this book, and at times it made me laugh.

I enjoyed this book from debut author James Bailey. I loved it for its fun and funny story, I wouldn’t agree with it being the best comedy of the year but it did make me laugh a bit. It was quite a quick read but I felt that it was still quite padded out and needed a faster pace at times.
