It wasn't until after I started reading this story that I realized that it was an audiobook prior to being published as a physical book. From the author of The Gilded Wolves comes an enchanting story about a princess and a prince who are spelled out of love going on a journey together to find their own ways to be free. However, what they discover along the way may make them realize what their hearts truly desire.

This story was short and adorable. Chokshi still manages to fit such a complicated backstory of each character into less than 200 pages and do it with such impact. I could really feel for Imelda and being held back by a controlling father. I could also feel for Ambrose and his need to break free from the expectations his family has for him. They also had some really good scenes between each other that they learn to trust and love each other even though they might not acknowledge it.

I also liked the whimsical feeling of the story. It threw me back to the fairy tales that we read as kids with silly and dangerous encounters but also lingering magic beyond our comprehension. That being said, it made me feel like the story was for a younger audience as a result.

The romance and the chemistry between Imelda and Ambrose was cute, but was it my favorite romance ever? Definitely not. It might be because I'm not a huge fan of the "falling out of love only to be thrown back into love" trope. That being said, I still think it was done really well.

Once More Upon a Time is a short and sweet story you can easily devour in one sitting with an enchanting tale that will whisk you back to your childhood.

I received a copy of this story as an e-ARC from NetGalley. Any and all opinions are my own.
