هذه الروايه تتحدث عن إرهاق نفسي في اطار اجتماعي ففي الفصول الاربعه الاولى يحاول ان يعطيك صوره واضحه عن البطل يعقوب حيث هو رجل لا يتصف بالباقة ولا يستطيع الانخراط في العلاقات الاجتماعيه وما يتطلبه ذلك من يقظه ذهنيه للاعراف ولضبط السلوك والانفعال ومواكبه اهتمامات الناس المحيطه وفهم العادات والتقاليد وفي الفصل الخامس يظهر لهذا البطل نسخه يتعرف عليه ليظهر انه شخص عكسه تماما رجل ذكي اجتماعيا فطين للاعراف وينزل الناس منازلهم وهنا نقع في صورتين لذات الشخص الصوره الاولى هي صوره انسان اجتماعي يحيط نفسه بالاشخاص ويفهم كيف يتعامل معهم وفق الاعراف والآداب والشخص الاخر هو البطل الذي ما زال الى الان يواجه صعوبات في الانخراط مع المجتمع ويبرر ذلك كونه رجل يرفض التملق يرفض المداهنات ويرفض ارتداء الاقنعه ويرى ان ذلك هو سمو اخلاقي يفتقده المجتمع الذي يعيش وفق صور ليست حقيقيه تحت مداهانات وتملقات وخداع لا تنم عن الصراحه وشفافية.

حين نتحدث عن المجتمع فنحن نتحدث عن العلاقات التي تنتقل من الوظيفه والتراتبيه الوظيفيه الى الحياه فبالتالي الذين يرتبط بهم البطل هم في الاصل العلاقات مرجعها لوظيفته ورتبته في المجتمع حيث تخرج العلاقة خارج العمل في بيوتهم وفي مناسباتهم ، لهذا يزيد الضغط و الإحراج، فالبطل يقع في مواقف محرجة اجتماعياً تمس كرامته و سمعته ، كما أنه يصبح مادة لسخرية الآخرين وفضولهم، مؤلمة جداً مشاهد الاذلال الاجتماعي التي يضعها دوستويفسكي فالكبرياء و الكرامة أساس احترام الإنسان لنفسه فكيف يضعه في مواقف محرجة ووسط الناس ! .

لكن يصعب في الروايه الحديث عن الضحيه والجاني ، فحين يدعي يعقوب أن الأذى الاجتماعي يتعرض له لكون شخص حقيقي نجده يمارس ذات الاذيه على خادمه بيتروشكا ، فالخادم رجل كسول سكير لا يعتد بالادب العام و الذوق ، فكيف يعامله يعقوب غوليادكين؟ كيف يعامل شخص حقيقي ؟ .. يشتمه ويتضجر منه ! ، يمارس البطل ذات الترفع و التعالي الاجتماعي على خادمه ! ، فهل المشكلة فعلا في التملق الاجتماعي أم أنها مشكلة هشاشة نفسية تمنع صاحبها من مواكبة الناس؟ يعقوب النسخة لم يفضح يعقوب الحقيقي بل جعله يغرق في تبريره فلا يجد مخرجاً ليصبح محترما و مقدراً ، وهنا نراه ينهار فعليا وتلتبس عليه الحقائق و الاوهام .

تعرضت الرواية لنقد ازعج المؤلف الذي يعتبر روايته حتى بعد أكثر من عشرين سنة روايةً عميقة ، وهي بالفعل عميقة في مواجهة فكرة استحقاق الإحترام الاجتماعي و القبول في المجالس الراقية ، وربما نزع الحدود و التصرف بعفوية لا يصنع علاقة اجتماعية يحيطها الوقار.
