While not my favorite Dostoyevsky novel, "The Double" tells an interesting story of a protagonist who encounters his doppelganger - a more charismatic and successful version of himself. The presence of this double relegates the protagonist to the role of spectator in his own life.

I found it challenging to stay engaged at times due to the novel's meandering dialogue. However (and I might be reaching for praise here) this wandering narrative style was in its own way quite charming as it mirrors the protagonist's own slipping grasp on reality.

I appreciate the subjectiveness of the plot and its open-ended interpretation, plus that the premise itself must have been very fresh at the time. Although I'm glad to have read it, I don't imagine I'll read The Double a second time as I have other Dosto novels..

رواية محيرة ، عبقرية ومبدعة ، مستفزة ، كما هي جميع اعمال دوستويفسكي.


•عناصر القوة :

- الفكرة الابداعية والسابقة لعصره.

- اسلوب السرد والوصف الجذاب المميز ، والذي يختزل اسلوب دوستويفسكي كله.

- كتابة الحوار ، والحوار الداخلي خصيصا.

- الشخصية : الشخصية ليست عظيمة ، وليست شخصية "البطل" الذي يحبها الجميع ، وهذا ما لا يتميز به البطل عن ابطال دوستويفسكي الآخرين ، ولكن ما يمتاز به بطلنا هنا هو عدم امتلاك القارئ لانطباع محدد عنه ، ايغضب منه ، ام يشفق عليه ، ايسخر منه ، ام يرثى لحاله ؟
لا اعتقد ان شخصية البطل تشبه اي شخصية دوستويفسكية اخرى ، بإستثناء بافيلو بافيلوفيتش من رواية الزوج الابدي الذي يذكرني به ، مع العلم ان غوليادكين كان اكثر شقاءً ، ما يذكرني ايضا ببطل رواية "رسائل من تحت الارض".


•عناصر الضعف :

- بالنسبة لي شخصيا ، لم ارى سلبية واحدة في العمل ، بإستثناء بعض الاشياء والعناصر المتناقضة بعد تعديل دوستويفسكي للنسخة الاولى من الرواية ، والتي تدراكها المترجم اصلا. ( ويحتمل أن دوستويفسكي ترك هذه التناقضات عمدا ليظهر حالة الجنون التي حلت بالبطل ، خصوصا وان هذه التناقضات كانت خلال حواراته الداخلية).


- لم أشعر بالملل مطلقا ، ولم ارَ ان الأحداث كانت اطول من اللازم ، كانت شبه مثالية بالنسبة لي.

j'ai pas capté. Par contre, le livre est intentionnellement mélangeant, difficile de discerner le réel du faux. Le double est-il une allégorie pour la schizophrénie, la dualité du soi ou est-ce qu'il est juste un fils de pute qui existe pour hate sur son twin. Honnêtement, je sais vraiment pas. 

J'aime penser que le double n'existe pas. Pietrouchka, l'homme le plus proche de Goliadkine, semble remarquer et être dérangé par la folie de Goliadkine. Quand il trouve l'adresse du double et quand il dit, saoul, qu'il veut vivre avec quelqu'un de normal qui n'existe pas en double, on comprend que le double n'est sûrement qu'une illusion.

Alors, même si le livre est écrit sous la perspective de Goliadkine, qui ne voit rien d'anormal, on repère parfois des anomalies. Que représente ce double, que fait-il dans la vie de Goliakine? J'imagine qu'il représente à la fois tout ce qu'il voudrait être et tout ce qu'il déteste. Ces faces cachées de sa personnalité sont enfouis derrière l'insécurité apparente de Goliadkine. Lorsqu'il essai de faire la paix avec son twin/qu'il lui demande de l'écouter et de le considérer, je vois un homme qui s'implore soi-même de se respecter, un homme qui se met à genoux devant un miroir et qui prie de pouvoir se regarder, par désir de récupérer son estime de soi.
Le double est à la fois le bon et le mauvais, ce qu'il est et ce qu'il n'est pas. Il est ceci et cela. Une dualité confuse.

Gizli saklı değil, hiçbir oyun çevirme­den, gayet açık bir biçimde hareket ederim ve kime, nasıl zarar, hem de büyük bir zarar vereceğimi bilmeme rağ­men Krestyan İvanoviç, elimi böyle işlerle kirletmem.

Belki sizden de benden de temiz olan­ları aşağılamak niyetinde değilim... yani benden de temiz olanları Krestyan İvanoviç, sizi kastetmek istemedim. İmalı sözlerden de hoşlanmam; ikiyüzlülüğe de tenezzül etmem; iftiradan ve dedikodudan tiksinirim. Maskeyi sadece mas­keli balolarda takarım, insanların arasında dolaşırken değil.


O maskeyi takmadın Golyadkin... Ama çevrendeki maskeli insanlar seni yargıladılar.


Very strange read, which I'm not sure I fully understood. Nithing really happens in the first 65 pages (there are 164) and after that I found the story very confusing. More that disappointed with this read.

Beside himself with shame and despair, the utterly ruined though perfectly just Mr. Golyadkin dashed headlong away, wherever fate might lead him; but with every step he took, with every thud of his foot on the granite of the pavement, there leapt up as though out of the earth a Mr. Golyadkin precisely the same, perfectly alike, and of a revolting depravity of heart.

Another work considered and passed over across an adult lifetime. My negligence stemmed from a glib judgement: this is a derivative of Gogol, not the mature Dostoevsky.

So, it is. It is still atmospheric and visionary. It is still worth one's time. A St. Petersburg clerk terminally bloated with self-regard is falling apart but doesn't recognize such. It is well within one's rights to become dissembled, it isn't kosher, however, to have an impish double arrive! Before on incant the name of Bret Easton Ellis, the supernatural is summoned and more than once a character's thoughts go febrile. Yet the Neva flows, amidst snow, slush and fog. Matters aren't deigned yellow, for crime is a metaphysical institution and this punishment is purely personal. I can see why this was Nabokov's favorite from Dostoevsky.
