Reading this helped me appreciate how much Dostoyevsky grew as a writer. It is confusing, clunky, and makes you feel like you must’ve missed something. I went online and read the point by point plot to make sure I didn’t read a bad version. I did not miss anything, it’s just confusing and clunky LOL

This didn’t hit the mark for me. I find Dostoyevsky’s work a little more profound in the way of human psychology, this one feeling a little flat, as if only a superficial exploration of mania. I usually love the way he manages to capture small essences of the world in such a humane way, yet in this it seemed he deviated by adding some fantastical element which, while making the plot somewhat interesting, dejected me from grasping the horrific nature of the narrators psychological torment. It wasn’t all gloom (even though the plot essentially was), because as always his exemplary characters are engaging and the scenes he creates are able to inspire the greatest of sympathies, hilarities, and loathings. I would still recommend this book, I only found a portion of myself disappointed that is deviated from his usual style.

Book Riot Read Harder Challenge: Book written before 1850

Certainly not my favorite of his works. But Dostoyevsky has a way with portraying the human experience in a way that satisfies. His characters always embody helplessness and powerlessness in such a real and evocative way. I love his writing.

رواية عميقة عمقا عجيبا ، يا لأسلوب الكاتب العظيم

Though I had to read this for a course, and analyze it to death, I came out the other side really liking this story.
(The course was all about doubles, so we read this, the text to Ingmar Bergman's "Persona", and another text, whose name escapes me at present. Fascinating subject, one which many authors have explored.)

I feel like when one finishes reading Russian literature a celebration should happen. Confetti should fall from the ceiling, someone should hand you a glass of champagne, and you should be presented with an award.

I'm exaggerating a little. I actually enjoy some Tolstoy. But Dostoyevsky is just so serious. And dry. And lacking of any joy. The only thing that got me through was stubbornness.
