I feel utterly stupid for not understanding this novel and its purpose. The language was crappy and uncomfortable to read, either because the translation was not that well adapted or because the novel is written in the 19th century.
The beginning is reasonable enough and I do believe there's some more profound message I just gravely miss. The novel gets crazier and crazier, which is probably the point. However, I struggled to end this (I had busy schedule, though) and I found the characters unpleasant.

To me this book was purely a look at the mind and its decline. A man who is isolated and is not popular, and is desperate to make a good impression and be respected and to find love. But he is sick. His mind finally breaks after being rejected at a party. He faces his double, the man who he should be. If he were that man, he would be respected. But he is not that man, he is worthless and broken, and ultimately taken off to an asylum in front of his peers. It’s a very good novella. A good look at the mind and how it sees the world through broken and downtrodden eyes.

Un roman déconcertant avec une plume qui ne m’a pas toujours rappelé celle de Dostoievski.
Le personnage principal, Goliadkine, commence à voir son double qui le suit et qui, petit à petit, prend sa place dans sa propre vie. L’auteur a voulu parler de santé mentale, de ‘folie’ mais je ne peux m’empêcher de me dire que cela a été fait gauchement car ses descriptions ne correspondent finalement pas vraiment à une maladie et son personnage tombe dans des stéréotypes qui manquent de sens.
Il s’agit là du deuxième roman du romancier, il était intéressant de voir comment il écrivait à ses débuts.

داستان خوبی بود هرچند معتقدم در زمان مناسبی نخوندمنش. یک ویژگی برجسته آثار داستایفسکی تاکیدیه که داستایفسکی بر بعد روانی شخصیت‌های آثارش داره، به عبارتی چنان ظریف و موشکافانه جنبه‌های روحی و لایه‌های تودرتو روانی این شخصیت‌ها رو توصیف می‌کنه که گویی به جای نویسنده با یک روانشناس خبره مواجه‌ایم در این باره هرچند به کرار این نقل و قول نیچه گفته شده اما باز گفتارش خالی از لطف نیست که به باور نیچه داستایفسکی تنها روانشناسیه که از او چیزی آموخته. اما برگردیم به خود داستان، اول اینکه به نظرم بر خلاف دیگر آثار بزرگ داستایفسکی که عمدتاً شاهد حضور شخصیت‌های زیادی در فضای داستان بودیم و مقهور شخصیت پردازی کم نظیر نویسنده در خصوص هرکدام از اون شخصیت‌ها می شدیم در این اثر تمرکز و توجه اصلی نویسنده میشه گفت به نوعی تنها بر روی یک شخصیت اصلی بنا نهاده شده. نکته دوم در خصوص این اثر این بود که فضای غالب داستان بر سیر افکاری پی ریزی شده که در ذهن گالیادکین می‌گذره و خواننده از دریچه نگاه فردی جنون زده به داستان نگاه می کنه به این دلیله که مرز میان خیال و واقعیت برای مخاطب چندان مشخص و روشن نیست خودمم هم تا صفحات پایانی کتای مطمئن نبودم که آیا شخصیت اصلی داستان دچار وهم و جنون شده یا نه، آیا واقعاً همزادی وجود داره یا نه. نکته سوم دست گذاشتن داستایفسکی بر مسئله رنج انسانه، کدامیک از ما هستیم کاملاً از رنج بیگانه باشیم، به نظرم درهم آمیختگی همیشگی شخصیت‌های داستان آثار داستایفسکی با موضوع رنج و محنتی که با اون دست به گریبانند حاکی از نوع نگاه و احترامیه که داستایفسکی برای رنج قائل بوده و اون رو به عنوان یک مولفه ذاتی زندگی پذیرفته و همیشه سعی کرده به نوع واکنش‌های شخصیت‌های داستانی‌اش را به مسئله رنج در آثارش بازنمایی کنه، این جمله داستایفسکی شاید به خوبی منعکس کننده نگاه داستایفسکی به مسئله رنج باشه جاییکه میگه تنها هراس من در تمام زندگی همیشه این بود که شایسته رنج خود نباشم. نکته آخر ترجمه روان و مناسب سروش حبیبی از این اثر بود که خواندنش را برای مخاطب دلنشین‌تر کرده.

This was my first Dostoyevsky book and I think I won't be picking up his other works anytime soon.
Despite being a short novel with less than 200 pages, I couldn't connect with the story or characters at all.
The story was interesting and I was absolutely intrigued with the plot but I just end up speed reading it, just to get to the end.
The last chapter was brought up to a crescendo where it crashed and burned and quickly ended. I couldn't quite understand it until I looked up some explanations. I was so confused.
So I gave it a 2.5 stars, mainly for the complex main character and the creepiness feeling of the novella.
