Normally I don't enjoy "slow burn" but this one was honestly ok? I liked the story, it wasn't relayed to a secondary position compared to the romance so that's definitely a plus. Some parts feel slow or they drag on, but never to the point it's unbearable.

There's a dearth of baihe novels, in contrast to the proliferation of danmei. 女将军和长公主 is touted as one of the strongest baihe with the bonus that it's written by an author who's lesbian. I quite liked Lin Wanyue's arc, of taking on her brother's identity and joining the army after her village is wiped out by the Huns. It reminds me of She Who Became The Sun and The Long Ballad. Li Xian and palace politics don't interest me as much. I had been warned this is slow paced. Currently Li Xian is plotting how to utilize Wanyue as a chess piece to ensure her younger brother's ascension of the throne. Wanyue is fascinated by the beautiful princess. At the moment I'm not sufficiently invested to want to know what's going to happen next. DNF at chapter 51 but may return to it in the future.

"There are some people who were just meant to be together. No matter in life or death, from the edge of the world to the corners of the sea, they would find each other. After they had experienced all kinds of misery, they would never separate again."
I wish they had a much more deserved and glorious ending than the one they had, as I believe it was just a typical romance ending rather than something true to character. I also didn't like the part where Li Xian's attraction towards Lin Wan Yue is mentioned, as I thought it was underdeveloped and could've had more character. With all this being said, I will still recommend anyone to read this book. It worth trying out!
