i’ve been thinking about this book non-stop ever since i started reading it and yet i still can’t put into words how this story has been engraved on my heart
since i’m still a little shaken up, this is not really gonna be a review, but a list with reasons why you should consider giving this book a chance:
first of all, it's written by a lesbian, meaning that at the very least the couple is treated with care and dignity, but she writes so beautifully and creates every little thing with a purpose, which makes every character feel like an actual person with real feelings and desires. that causes the story to feel alive and it’s what makes it so good.
also, it’s a very long slow-burn type of story, bringing us along for a good chunk of the main characters’ life, going through all of the ups and downs and the personal growth that they experience. this is why i feel completely comfortable saying that lin wanyue and li xian are MY children and i WILL protect them with my life.
as for the couple itself, they’re amazing, they love each other so so deeply and are so willing to work through their worst problems and hardships, because they’re each other’s person forever and always. and that’s why it’s impossible not to root for them until the very end.
but that’s that, please read it, it’s wonderful and totally worth it. also, ancient chinese lesbians?? women with swords and bows??? political intrigue?? yes.
