For Her Consideration by Amy Spalding

This is only the second book of Amy Spalding's that I've read and it didn't disappoint. While I think it would be almost impossible for Spalding to write a book I loved more than 'The Summer of Jordi Parez' - one of my all-time favourite queer books - this was still an absolute delight. It reminded me a lot of Jae's Hollywood series, not in a copycat way but just a similar vibe.

It started off a little slow but once I pushed through the beginning and once Ari became more involved the story picked up nicely. I liked Nina as a main character, she was certainly flawed but it never verged into unlikeable and she and Ari worked really well together. The surrounding cast of friends and Nina's aunt all served as entertaining and likeable side characters.

I desperately wish we got a big blow-up scene between Nina (or one of Nina's friends) and Taylor where Taylor was told to shove it where the sun don't shine. The absolute irony of Taylor calling Nina toxic while being the queen of toxic herself.

All in all this was a great read, it felt a lot like Jordi Perez but more mature and adult and would honestly make a great little queer rom com.

Thank you to Kensington Books and NetGalley for making an arc available for me to review in exchange for an honest review.

A fast WLW romance read that was enjoyable and had a sweet message about what being in your early 30’s is like, plus lots of Found Family vibes. Not super steamy, which is totally fine by me, but good characterization and believable conflict. I really liked how, in the end, Nina was working toward her dream with real possibility and also enjoying the day-job she had; that felt realistic and fair for her character and honestly a happy ending for her.

The only thing I didn’t really understand is why the agent kept saying that Ari was extremely “difficult”? Like, we see that Ari likes being in charge and making decisions, and that’s what the major fight between her and Nina ends up being about, but… IDK, nothing that Ari was doing on the page of the book seemed so serious as to rate her “the most difficult client” that the agent (for whom Nina worked) had. So I was kind of waiting for that shoe to drop?

Also, it’s clear that Amy Spalding loves the Eastside of LA, and it would’ve been fun to have a whole list of all the restaurants, bars, and coffee shops visited in the book.

I wanted to love this much more than I did. the second half was better and I eventually got more invested in the story but it legit took me a whole month to finish. part of that was my own fault with life and being in a reading slump but it was also partly because I just couldn’t fully get into it. it was cute, but not great.

3.5. This was a pretty cute f/f romance with a fun Hollywood setting and tons of lgbt/gender diverse characters. In fact there's literally only one man I can remember in this story and it's their uber driver lmao. The story is centered around Nina, a queer, plus-sized woman working in the entertainment industry as a sort of ghostwriter for celebrity emails. side note is this a real job? It sounds kind of fun.

Anyway what Nina really wants to do is write for movies and tv. Her job is pretty mundane until she meets Ari, one of her clients who is an up and coming queer actor known to be difficult to work with. Apparently. I didn't really get that at all from Ari's vibe? I think it was just sort of written in as a catalyst for them to meet, but not once in the story did I see Ari as neurotic or controlling, more the cool go-with-the-flow type. But that's just me.

Anyway (2) they meet, become entangled, chaos ensues, they have a disagreement, they make up, I won't spoil the end for you but all's well that ends well. I will say that something I HIGHLY APPRECIATED was that the issues they encountered in their relationship were NOT a miscommunication trope!! Thank you for being original! It felt much more realistic and satisfying for them to work out legitimate mistakes made on both parts rather than just getting mad at each other for not talking :)

The characters ranged from ok to good for me. I liked Nina enough. She's definitely a bit lost and DEFINITELY needs to go to therapy, which was acknowledged and talked about openly with her friends which I loved :) speaking of which I LOVED her friends! Such a fun little group that love and support and uplift each other, I loved them. Ari was probably the weak point for me - I thought she was a little love bomby at times and I hated how she always called Nina by her full name as some kind of quirk, it was so annoying please

I am not a fan of Spalding's previous work so I picked this one p with a bit of trepidation. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the storyline, the supporting characters, and how respectful Ari was. Nina did get on my nerves sometimes, but her ex really did a number on her so it was understandable.
