This novel follows three people who are all considering becoming a family and parenting a child together: a cis woman, a trans man who previously was a trans woman and detransitioned (as the title suggests, and a trans woman (who is an ex of #2). Based on that alone I’m sure you can tell there are some complicated ties and a lot of people sorting out identity in this book. All three people are both likable and unlikable in their own way. None of them are perfect. Of course by the nature of this book being told from the perspective primarily of trans people, I found it illuminating on some experiences and perspectives of trans people. Big theme of this book to me: trans people face a lot of struggles and hardship (to put it very lightly), but in the case of this book, also crave very “normal” problems, like how to have children and raise a family. Poignant but messy. Gave me a lot to think about.
