At every turn this booked asked, “what if we troubled this issue?”, “what if we asked more complex questions?”, “what if we honed into the intersections of identity, made camp there and got comfortable?”.

Detransition, Baby asks its reader to think critically, but not become analytic. It’s humane in the strongest sense of the world. But it’s also limited in some of the questions it asks, particularly around race. The author isn’t afraid to talk race and even make fun of the way queer white people interact with race, but the same the book centers whiteness and some of the satirical commentary on race started to fall flight because the book ended up reproducing it.

The characters are all incredibly flawed. Reese was flawed, layered and loveable. The other two characters, Reese and Katrina, I found to be a lot harder to connect with and flawed but not in in a way that made them seem real. Those two characters started to feel like political statements the author was making.

Overall, I devoured this book. I couldn’t stop reading. I know it’ll stick with me for a long time, but it’s not a new favorite.

First 100 pages were really solid and then it just fell off. Has a very PKD approach to dialogue where characters just say exactly what they think inside all the time realism be damned, the very best and most psychedelic artifice when well-done but here in this "literary" story it felt increasingly corny. Catty omniscient commentary relied upon whenever human prose is needed.

Detrans-baby-throuple is a really solid concept but the book literally never gets to it! It never happens! The baby is never born! It's lost in flashback the entire way!
