I appreciated the parts of this that induced welcome discomfort in the way that new perspectives on life force us to learn something or think differently. I did not appreciate the plot that basically led nowhere? I did appreciate the subplots and timeline-play. And I always appreciate solid, good quality - albeit heavy handed, in this case - writing.

3.5 stars

I love all the perspectives and how they show the disparity between how we view ourselves vs how outsiders view us. The plot is entertaining and mentally stimulating. There’s a lot of nuance to think through and the book is kind of like a kaleidoscope. It’s definitely the most in depth novel I’ve read about the trans experience and it doesn’t shy away from any of the more complicated parts of queerness. I was kind of surprised I could relate to a lot of the book despite not being trans myself.

This book touches on lots of different topics, including gender, parenthood, and womanhood. I like how I could not fully identify with one of the characters, especially opinion-wise. Their opinions made me think about those topics and about my own opinions on them. The writing was a bit much at times and was too long in some parts. Still an interesting book, for sure!

“Trans women are juvenile elephants. We are much stronger and more powerful than we understand. We are fifteen thousand pounds of muscle and bone forged from rage and trauma, armed with ivory spears and faces unique in nature, living in grasslands where any of the ubiquitous humans may or may not be a poacher.”
