I think this book will stick with me forever. Reese, Katrina and Ames are all so interesting and flawed and at moments I hated them all and at moments I loved them all, but I never wanted to give up on them and their idea of what family could mean. My heart hurt so much every time Reese decided to self sabotage instead of just like, work out her problems, even if she's confronted about them head-on. Life is so messy and arbitrary. I really loved this book.

enjoyable to read, up there as one of the queerest fictions i’ve read, i’m not over how good the title is after reading the book. DB captured some juicy conversations i am drawn towards and contributed to some questions that are The Questions Of My Life. one of the twinges i’ve developed after reading a lot of romance by white authors is when these white authors make it clear how weird their relationship with their race and racism is through their weird descriptions, maneuverings, and over-compensations. romance is a useful genre for this twinge bc the whole deal is about interpersonal relationships. i think torrey peters could have done a better job in her handling of katrina’s racial identity, and some of her comparisons between race and gender were frankly weird at best.

Really interesting story and set up. I found it hard to be sympathetic to the characters. They're so wounded and ridiculous and I'm not as sorry for them as I maybe should be. That made the story hard to love. I very much liked it though. I've never read something so blatantly queer and trans which was exciting, if only for novelty and chuckles of recognition.
