Yay I finished!!

I don't even know how to begin to review this book! It was long and I thought parts of it definitely dragged on, and I DEF was out there reading chapter summaries for a few in the middle. I can see why there was an abridged version. But overall I thought it was great! The characters were so flushed out and developed and I liked all the different stories and elements going on. My favorite was the iconic dog hero Kojak obviously!!!!

I loved the beginning bits where the virus was just setting in and the setup of all that. absolutely wild it was great. The middle bits were the parts that dragged more, especially when it was the ridiculously long chapters about characters I didn't like as much or care about sorry!! But then it really picked back up toward the end in the third book and I thought it finished strong.

Normally when I finish a book I wanna go and watch any movies/shows that were based on it but honestly I don't know if I would really want to watch an adaptation of this. I just don't know how they would do it justice. And apparently they didn't because the current series is sitting at a 5.5 rating on IMDb lmao. Those casting choices seem...interesting...

anyways yeah I liked it. Don't know if I'll be running to read another book this long again anytime soon because it took me almost 2 months with only a break in there bc I had to wait for my loan to come back from the library lol but I enjoyed it. Thank you Mr. King

a curious book. objectively too long, but spending as much time as you do in the characters heads is maybe the only reason it works at all. interested in questions around the evils which seem to accompany "societal development" (king means capitalist modernity, but seems to lack the language or political commitment) but struggles to suggest any solutions besides twiddling your thumbs, reinstating liberal institutions, and waiting for god to come down and kill the evil ones. running through all of this are kings personal quirks: a fondness for colorado which feels not so much familiar as encyclopedic, a reworking of the lord of the rings that (especially in the version set in 1990) makes every character sound like an absolute dork, the repeated decisions to kill off more interesting characters so that the king protagonists™ can take center stage, and, of course, his thing with greasers.

Well, that was a long one! Long but very enjoyable.
I've been keen to read this for a while but was a little put off by the length, but at the same time couldn't bring myself to read the shorter version. I did read the hobbit at the same time, both took me around a month to get through.

For many people, this wouldn't be a good time to read this book, with this subject matter, as the world is in the grip of the Corona Virus crisis (Apr2020) however I felt it made the book so much more believable.
It's an epic tale with lots of characters to remember and to keep track of but the writing made it easy for me to get to grip with the 'cast'. There is a chapter by chapter medium post by JohnBirmingham which i found helpful whenever I had a break from the book. I also found a great map tracking the routes of the characters.

Overall I enjoyed the book, the plot is quite straight forward but its more about in-depth character development. Was I glad to finish? maybe a little, but now I'm intrigued to watch the TV series.
I'd also recommend picking up the comic book adaptations. The ones I read so far are very good.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
BOOK REVIEW!
READING DATES:
October 30th, 2021 – November 6th, 2021
The Stand by Stephen King was a exhilarating and terrifying novel that ultimately left me disappointed.
One week after a man escapes a testing facility caring a weaponized strain of the Superflue, 99 percent of the world’s population dies from the virus. In the United Sates of Amierica two major forces of good and evil gather the survivors to create a new world order.
I honestly felt that I read this novel at the perfect time. Within the covid era, The Stand was horrifingly realistic. But with medicocore writing and badly done characters Stephen King’s The Stand was a incredibly disappointing experience.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
4 out of 5 Stars
Due to the fact that I lost my edition for athe Stand I no longer own a copy of the novel. I totally doubt that I will ever purchase and/or reread The Stand.
LIFE STUFF:
Eevee the Corgi is a great puppy, I love her so much. My my partner and I have just recently recovered for covid. I have not been getting that much reading done.
I am currently on the last fourth pages of Cluve Barker’s The Great and Secret Show.

The Stand is, by a country mile, the best post-apocalyptic novel I have ever read. Writing a 1300-page long epic about 30/40 survivors of a flu plague and making it a legendary, unforgettable story is no daunting task for Stephen King. The Stand is a permanent monument of literature, an exemplification of King's talent for creating the most endearing characters and the cruelest of villains. Easily in my Top 5 favorite books.
