Darren is shocked to learn that he has to face 5 terrifying trials to prove his worth as a vampire and if he fails he will be murdered in the Hall of Stakes. He has help to train but when all seems to be lost,is running away the best answer?

This was a great read. I was gripped by the trials and the tension over Darren's fate, and the impending war with the vampaneze.A really good horror read.

This book gave me the what was then the worst book-induced headache I had ever had. ;) I think I had a bit of a pause with this series and had probably forgotten some things about the characters and world, but even knowing that, I just couldn't forgive this one its flaws - character stupidity, weird plotting, gratuitous violence, least of all the huge cliffhanger ending - so it's really not that surprising it became one of the first series I expressly decided not to finish.

This was a surprisingly exciting little book. It had me there at the end and was shocked it was over already! Maybe my journey through this series isn't over as the last book made me feel.

This one was a fun, fast paced, action packed ride. A bit of an easy to expect twist but nonetheless this has been my favorite in the series so far.

This has been my favorite Darren book so far! It's completely action packed and because it's the turning point for Darren's hero journey, it's a fast and terrible (in the good way) ride!

Summary: The trials: seventeen ways to die unless the luck of the vampire is with you. Darren Shan must pass five fearsome trials to prove himself to the vampire clan - or else face the stakes of the Hall of Death. But Vampire Mountain holds hidden threats. Sinister, potent forces are gathering in the darkness. In this nightmarish world of bloodshed and betrayal, death may be a blessing. . . .

What I liked about this book: Darren is growing up. He's facing decisions that alter the course of his life and those he cares for and learns what it means to be a Vampire. The codes, the loyalty, the "old-school" ways of the Vampires may seem foreign and unyielding, but they have purpose. Darren learns to fight with his fists as well as his mind and begins his growth as both a human and a Vampire. Great life lessons incorporated in this book with such vivid imagery through the Trials that you feel like you're there with Darren facing the greatest tribulations of his life!

These books just get better and better, I love all the characters and their different personalities and im enjoying learning more about the world the author has created. I also like that although Darren is Weaker and smaller than everyone these books often show that it is his brains that keep him going, yet at the same time he is still young and can make foolish mistakes. I also suspect ive guessed how the issue that arises can be solved, cant wait to see if im correct, if I am it will make the following books even more amazing
