Mr. and Mrs. Bunny--Detectives Extraordinaire! by Polly Horvath

This is the sort of comedy that is either side-splittingly funny or falls flat, depending on the reader. I found it completely hilarious - the whole bunny world, Mr. and Mrs. Bunny's marriage, the hippy world of Madeline's parents, the general dry humor, and of course Sophie Blackall's illustrations. As a mystery, it doesn't quite succeed - this is really the only flaw. Nothing much happens for a long time, the bunny detectives sort things out completely by accident, and the reader knows the answers all along while the characters remain in the dark. I'd recommend it more to fans of funny talking animal stories than I would to young mystery fans - I also think it would make a fun read-aloud for sharp young listeners.

Does not make a good read aloud. It is very wordy, it is hard to tell who is talking during the dialogue, there are a lot of asides and comments that are not relevant to the age group reading the book, and the story never really gets going. I was disappointed. If my son had not insisted we keep reading, I would have abandoned it after the first few chapters.

Polly Horvath at her absolute whackadoodliest. No, that's not a word, but I'm okay with that. I truly have no idea who this book is for but I suppose I'm okay with that too.

This is a charming book for adults, but I don't think kids will get it. It reads as a book written to make the adult readers laugh but will just go over the heads of most kids. I like some Polly Horvath sometimes, but she goes a bit overboard with the quirkiness on occasion. The uncle was just too odd to really make sense.

This book was bizarre. Sometimes I was cringing and sometimes I was chuckling - which is why I stuck it out. Cool that it was read by the author, but some of the voices drove me crazy. Most likely on purpose. I just don't even know what to think about this book.

This would be a good book to read out loud to a child. It's fairly straight forward in it's presentation. It's cute, and occasionally funny. I found the story kind of flat and one dimensional, but it wasn't geared towards an adult. I think there are kids that would really enjoy it.

Absolutely delightful. Great characters and an adorable storyline. The relationship between Mr and Mrs Bunny is absolutely precious and I love their irritable banter. The parents were hilarious caricatures of hippies and I just couldn't stop giggling. Very well done.

This just wasn't the right choice for me. It felt a little too twee and hipster-ish in some ways, and a number of the jokes seemed more adult-oriented than child-oriented (not in a rated-R sense, though). The bunnies were exasperating and silly, and though I realize that was the point, it was too much for me. However, I think younger children would get a kick out of its goofiness and that it would make a great read-aloud for the 2nd/3rd grade set.

Avoid the audio at all costs.

I have read this book aloud twice now with my bunny loving 7 year old daughter. My husband would wander in as we were reading and laugh so hard. It is completely absurd. The story spins and spins out of control until you don’t think you can take it anymore. However, it all comes together in the end.
(Some commentary was provided by the bunny loving 7 year old who would really like to be adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Bunny.)
