Apparently one of the influences behind Robert Eggers' brilliantly weird film The Lighthouse, The Country of the Pointed Firs is for the most part a gentle, astute look at a community and a redoutable woman (Mrs Todd) who houses and befriends the narrator. There is one genuinely eerie moment, told by an old sea captain, but for the most part buckle in for beautiful vistas of the sea, Auld Maine Speechin', ruined farms being reclaimed by the forest, and white sails flapping in the breeze.
