English relies a bit too much on anecdote and hearsay. I found myself wanting to know more about the music and less about the rumors.

The content of this book blew my mind!
Very interesting - and readable even for someone like myself, who doesn't have a strong current knowledge of jazz music/jazz musicians.

I never realized the deep ties between jazz and organized crime. This book provides a detailed description for how organized crime influenced jazz. Overall, I think this book was good and very informative. I do think the book's transitions from the rise of jazz to Frank Sinatra to jazz during the age of rock and roll were sometimes abrupt. But as mentioned, very informative and I marvel at the sacrifices many of these black artists made to survive and share their music to the world.
