"You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free," even if it is harrowing, explicit, and excruciating to bear. - from the Author's Note

These poems play a part in bringing that truth to light and setting us free. How many of us have felt silenced, hidden, betrayed over the decades of sin and scandal and coverup? Some of the prayers written, the author's own dialogue with God - goddamn it, hear my prayer and where is your fury? there are tables here for you to turn over - put my own feelings into words. The author captures the tension of living as a member a divinely founded church that is wounded most by its human members. There is no sugarcoating here, but there is hope.

These poems are zealous and loving, and unexpectedly funny, too. Goddamn it, hear my prayer, the poetic voice says. Doubt this, Jesus says. If that isn't a portrait of every prayer life...

One of the things I love most about this book is that the author includes a suggestion for a piece of Scripture to pray with alongside each poem. It's clear that these poems come from contemplation and want to lead us right back there. I'm so grateful for their guidance.
