This book was weird and gross and just overall uncomfortable. But boy, was it a ride. I think the writing, the description, the scene setting was phenominal. I was intrigued from page one as to what Grenouille would do. He always zigged when I thought he would zag, and I loved it. Was it a bit over the top at times? Maybe. But overall this book was nothing like I have read before and I really enjoyed it!

What I Liked
  • The writing and the way he describes smell is the perfect amount of over description, yet still interesting.
  • Honestly, all the characters made me uncomfy, but I was here for it.
  • it’s almost as if we got a whole story of Renfield, like a weird, ugly dude living as a recluse and just a menace to society.
  • The freaking perfume orgy at his death march…NOT EXPECTING THAT.
  • The ending…so freaking good. To have him be torn apart by the people he wanted to so badly like him, who he ended up hating…gah so good.

What I didn’t like
  • We didn’t need to have him escape to the cave and live his little hermit life for 9 years lol. That section was way too long.
  • Not for those with a weak stomach.
  • Antoine Richis’ relationship with his daughter…ew

“God was a poor little stinker.”

Not a perfect book, but wow does this novel blend absurdism and nihilism almost seamlessly. It’s surprisingly funny in many ways, though mainly through Süskind’s comedic sentence structure, and maintains a steady flow of interesting facts through its course as well. However, the need to stop the story to thoroughly introduce each side character’s backstory when they first appear proved to be tedious and disengaging after a while. Along with that, some sections went on for just a bit too long and rambled while others cut through the interesting parts needlessly, causing the delivery of this story to be unbalanced at times. Still very fun and absurdist!
