“Life is paper-thin and fragile. Any sudden change could rip it wide-open.” I never knew a book about mental health with lgbtq+ rep is what I needed right now. I picked this book up in a daze without knowing much about it, and “We Are Okay” is more than okay. It is a cold novel (literally and methaporically) about dealing with grief of losing a loved one and learning to move on by opening up the dreadful past. As I followed Marin’s (MC) journey in a series of flashbacks and present events —and references of Jane Eyre and 100 Years of Solitude — she mirrored every teenager who are pensive, vulnerable, doubtful, lost, in denial, and longing to be loved. In the backdrop between summer in San Franscisco and winter in New York, Nina Lacour’s subtly lyrical writing made it easy for me to paint a picture of what she wanted her readers to think about.
Although I wished that this book had more depth to its story, I think the author’s intention is to make a reader feel sadness and loneliness even just for a short while, and that was enough to make this book memorable.
“It’s a dark place, not knowing. It’s difficult to surrender to. But I guess it’s where we live most of the time. I guess it’s where we all live, so maybe it doesn’t have to be so lonely. Maybe I can settle into it, cozy up to it, make a home inside uncertainty.”
Although I wished that this book had more depth to its story, I think the author’s intention is to make a reader feel sadness and loneliness even just for a short while, and that was enough to make this book memorable.

We Are Okay was good. Although I felt like I was always waiting for something to happen. The story was pretty powerful and sad. The quote that really spoke to me, and that I really needed to hear right now was “Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can.”

YA isn’t my thing but i’d say this is only YA insofar as the characters are 18. otherwise very poignant and deals with difficult topics gracefully. also set where I live which is always fun

It is the complexity of us and the layers we possess--the truths that we desperately search for and accepting that we may never learn--it is through this book with Marin's relationships that we see our own loneliness and our own hope.

This book was beautiful to say the least. The main character was lonely and lost you can tell by her words and the writing was great! The ending was great also and you felt her sadness and loneliness in life. I can't say that this was the best book ever because i don't know it felt like something SOMETHING I can't say what was missing or it could have been just my fault but I would recommend this book. PLUS IT HELPED ME GET OUT OF MY SLUMP so if you are in one I would definitely pick this short but meaningful book to read.

This book tells a story about a girl who, whilst dealing with grief, pushes away everyone she loves hoping to forget the past. It teaches us that sometimes we do get second chances, and we should choose decisions based on what our heart wants.
This book was very well written. I didn’t enjoy the story as much as I would like but I enjoyed the writing. This book was more of a “just vibes”, not plot type of read, which is new to me.
