Read with Liam for his reading group. Not particularly thrilling and more jesus-y than I'm comfortable with, but a good treatment of complex moral issues.
We listened to this as a family in the van on CD. It made us miss Milo! Some tense and stressful situations, but great lessons about taking responsibility and caring and kindness.

I really thought the dog died in this so was dreading reading but while there is some rough animal abuse it was not nearly as sad as I was expecting.

I had the opportunity to read this book with the fourth grade class I was subbing in. Oddly, I had never read this book before, so I had the chance to experience it with the students.
I enjoyed the book. There is a good story and a good moral and lesson about what is good and what is bad. Sadly, the language of the book (significantly accented even in the descriptive text) made it challenging for many of the kids in the class. This resulted in a holes in comprehension. I wish I had been more prepared for the language so I could have done the book over a longer period of time than I had. If we could have gone deeper into the characters and the events, I think the class would have enjoyed the book better.

This book would have been much more enjoyable had I been a "Dog Person". But I'm not and ended up bored through the first half of the book. The action picks up during the second half and pulls at the heartstrings. Many good life lessons to learn here, lots of things for the kiddos to think about and discuss, just a bit slow. (3.5 stars)
This book is about an 11-year-old boy named Marty in West Virginia who finds a dog who appears to have been abused. The dog follows him home, and it’s love at first sight. He quickly figures out that it belongs to his mean neighbour, Judd, who is known for mistreating his hunting dogs. Marty tries to hide the dog from him, so he won’t take him back, but Judd is relentless in tracking down his missing dog. Marty quickly falls into a trap of lying to his family, friends, and Judd to save Shiloh.
My 12-year-old and I read this together and we both enjoyed it. The storyline kept us in suspense about what would happen to Shiloh and if Marty’s web of lies would be exposed. The book is set in a real town, and while we were fuzzy on the time period, Google tells me it’s probably set in the 80s or 90s (so, “the olden days,” according to my kids lol).
A wonderful choice for kids who love animals, ages 9-12, and works as an excellent read-aloud as it has short chapters and a brisk pace. There are three sequels to Shiloh’s story that you can carry on with, but it works well as a stand-alone novel too.

I remember reading this in school and enjoying the book so much.
I loved this book as a kid so I got it for my kids to read. Of course they are not interested in anything mom picked out so I reread it myself and still love it. Have always been a huge animal lover, still am. Love that the kid fights for what is right, even if it's legally wrong. Good message.
