I jumped into this expecting it to be satirical, like the film.
But when I found out that Robert A. Heinlein was being dead serious, I actually found myself more fascinated by the book. I believe it's important to take in these differing viewpoints. Who wants to hear what they already believe preached non-stop? Also, one-star reviewing a book that when you simply disagree is ridiculous.
This is marvelously written. Not even close to as action-packed as the film, but instead using Rico and the other students as a vessel for Heinlein to "educate," with a lot of interesting things to say in a stern, strangely poetic way.
There is a lot of glamorizing the military going on here. A whole lot of "it isn't so bad," "the good in serving heavily outweighs the bad," etc. And I mean a WHOLE LOT. But it serves a neat historical significance as a response to America ending nuclear testing and "going soft" in the heat of Communist terror, and I am very glad to have read it.
