Re-read 12/2018
I wanted to re-read this one again because of how I think killing demons has changed over the course of the series-- which I totally think it has, unless Raum is a different type of demon. Still really love this book and laughed quite often. It hurt the heart a few times seeing how Ian is treated, but seriously he brought it on himself.

Re-read!
So... I really like Spade and this book only increased that as well as my soft spot for Ian. I like Spade and Denise together. The attraction was always there, but it did feel like a build up and there were reasons for each other to actually like each other, so yay. Also enjoyed how Denise ended up!

Surprising amount of editing/grammar mistakes for a traditionally published novel, to a point where it was quite noticeable, so I had to knock it down a peg for that.
More importantly, I felt there was more telling than showing in regard to the main characters’ feelings for each other. Overall their chemistry was believable and I enjoyed the progression of their relationship, but they both just claim that they’ve felt a strange connection ever since they first met, which we would never really gather on our own from reading that scene (I understand they weren’t POV characters in the main series but still). I think their relationship could’ve gotten a liiittle more development on page, because sometimes it felt like that supposed connection was used to propel their relationship further and faster than it might’ve otherwise. They only get one book so I get that there’s a limited amount of time, nonetheless I just wish we saw more of this actually playing out on page. But I still enjoyed the ride, as always Jeaniene’s books are addictive and very fast-paced. Still super fun and I ship them together anyway lol

this was a great book I loved it just as much as I do the Night Huntress novels, I was worried cause of others review on it and that it might suck,. But I opened it up and started reading it until I couldn't keep my eyes open, I had like two maybe three chapters left to read this morning when I woke up, I can't wait until I get the next book I am excited to read it now.

First Drop of Crimson is the first book in the "Night Huntress" spin-off series, "Night Huntress World" both by Jeaniene Frost. Denise has seen so much violence, chaos, and death recently and it seems as if it's not going to stop any time soon. A demon has set his sights on Denise and he won't leave her alone until he's forced to leave her alone. In comes Spade, a centuries old vampire who has promised to protect Denise at any cost. Will Spade be able to save Denise or will all be lost once the first drop of crimson falls?

This was exciting and entertaining just like the books from the Night Huntress series, the only different is that we're following characters who are normally side characters, but in this story they're main characters now. You might need to start the "Night Huntress" series before picking up the "Night Huntress World" series because "First Drop of Crimson" starts off where one of the "Night Huntress" books end. I really enjoyed that the sexy vampire Spade was our main male character. The main female character, Denise, really needed to grow on me. She's a survivor of a horrific attack and she has PTSD, I liked the mental health representation. What I didn't like about Denise is that she had the tendency to misunderstand almost every situation and every other conversation. By the end of the book I liked Denise a lot more but I still don't think she's as compelling as the main female character of the "Night Huntress Series", Cat.

Another thing I didn't like was the threat of sexual assault that Denise had to deal with. There's a character that gets rescued in this book by Spade and Denise and they say that they've spent decades as a prisoner/victim being assault sexually and physically. As you probably guessed, if they don't stop the evil forces in this book, Denise is being threatened with the same fate. I don't like when characters are threatened or have the threat of sexual assault looming over their heads so I'm just going to knock a star off and leave it at that.

The spicy scenes in this story were nice and sizzling hot! I thought Bones was the only vampire I was attracted to but Spade also seems like a good choice in a vampire companion. I'm giving the spicy scenes four chilies 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ out of five chilies

Overall, First Drop of Crimson was a good story, I loved how some of the side characters from the original "Night Huntress" series are the main characters of this series, "Night Huntress World". It was entertaining and I enjoyed most of it aside from the parts that mentioned sexual assault, those simply did not have to be included. I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars.

Wow, well, this is the first book in the Night Huntress World (spin-offs from the Night Huntress series) and focused on two characters that Frost's other novels have only touched upon briefly: Spade and Denise. Spade is your centuries-old, English (and, of course, sexy) vampire and Denise is the recent widow of Randy, a man killed by forces of the dark and supernatural world. Needless to say, vampires aren't often dinner guests at her home.

What I found most apparent about this book is that Frost had again returned back to the heavy on the sexy/naughty/kinky and light on the plot development. In my opinion, the story was weak. Some demon wanted revenge on one of Denise's long-lost relatives and was taking it out on various members of her family. But, Frost writes banter and lust in a way that can somehow override the need for a brilliant story - she is one of the few writers I know who does that well. She creates characters that you love and feel like you know, so despite whatever stupid demon-whatever-thingy is going on I always find myself interested because the characters are all important to me - even these two which had previously remained on the sidelines.

Frost has a gift for the small and funny but memorable moments. To compare, I would say look at the MacHalo scene in Faefever by Karen Marie Moning, you can't help but remember that moment. I felt the same when Ian, normally rather sly and cunning, came home 'pissed'[drunk] and singing Gilbert and Sullivan's 'I'm the Very Model of a Modern Major General' from 'Pirates of Penzance'. Hilarious.

And Spade, well, he was a lot sexier than I thought he'd be. Especially seeing as he had Bones to compete with. Granted, he will never be Bones in my eyes but the shower scene was fun! Denise was likeable but less impressive because I'm used to the spunky and brave Cat. She did improve throughout the novel, shedding a lot of her timidity that I suppose can be excused after her husband got ripped apart by a zombie.

I will definitely read Eternal Kiss of Darkness about Mencheres. I'm even more keen to read it after finishing Destined for an Early Grave, simply because we saw a lot more of him and his sense of humour:

Mencheres: Then you remember the dream. That bodes ill.

Cat: Hey, Walks Like An Egyptian, how about for once you drop the formal stuff and talk like you live in the twenty-first century?

Mencheres: The shit’s gonna splatter, start buggin’, yo.
