Complicated, thrilling, suspenseful. I got all of these emotions and more in First Drop of Crimson. I have read this twice at least. I have recently become addicted to audiobooks. The performance had be on edge chapter after chapter. Wonderful, exciting, even knowing the ending. AMAZING!!!!

I had always found Spade to be riveting. His gentleman behavior and old fashionedness stode out when placed next to the rather blunt characters of Cat and Bones. But mostly, I had always noticed his attitude towards Cat and Bones: caring, loyal kind. It helps that he is rather good looking as well (hehehe)

Having this story revolve around Denise and Spade was refreshing. This is not to say that the moments in which Cat and Bones were present were not my favorites (because they were) but because after having followed their story for about a week it was nice to meet new people. Mainly though Denise is such a wonderful character. She is firm in her humaness and unwilling to change simply for her lover. (also i like that she is somewhat of a demon- i loooove demons * in novels of course hehe* i think this comes from my obession with Al from Rachel Morgan series but anyways)

I have noticed that Frost has a tendency of making the plot a bit slow in which all the characters are either introduced or remembered and then developped. Only almost at the end does the plot culminate, usually in around 5 or 6 pages. In those few pages the villian is conquered and the heros walk off (or fly if they are vampires) into their happy ending. Why. Why can't we have a more balanced plot?

Enough with the rushed endings; can we not have a comma or a exclamation point or question mark? Sometimes a plain period is nice too.

Bascically, this was a pleasant addition to the rather extensive Night Huntress Series. I hope though that the series will return to Cat and Bones' perspectives!

This is the second time that I have read this book. The first time, I was not overly impressed as compared to the Night Huntress Series which is one of my very favorites. This time, I am doing a series re-read of the Night Huntress with the other stories from the same world all in the suggested reading order. This time around, I really enjoyed it. This is Spade and Denise's story. In a previous story, Denise lost her husband Randy in the Zombie war and suffered a miscarriage. The next time that she saw Cat, Bones, Spade and crew, she was almost raped and Spade killed the rapist in front of her. Although Spade saved her life, it was understandably too much for Denise. Too much death and loss. She pulled away from the supernatural world in an effort to rebuild her life. We all know that was too good to be true. An ancestor of hers, summoned a demon and then skipped out on the payment after banishing the demon. It has been many years after the original summoning and the demon is back for revenge. He is killing her relatives in an effort to track down the man who owes him payment ( his soul?). After killing three of her relatives, he tracks down Denise. She promptly relealizes that she is in over her head and that no human is going to believe her or be able to help her track her relative in time. The telephone numbers that she had for Cat and Bones no longer work. The only person she can reach is Spade. He agrees to come and help her although he thinks she may be suffering from a mental meltdown. Many things happen throughout the course of the book after this point. I likes the flow of the romance. They did not instantly fall in love and they did not forget their past loves. We also get more history about Bones,Spade and Ian.

Spade and Denise each had a broken heart that they managed to mend once they found each other. Looking forward to Mencheres story.

Enjoyed this book. Too much hot & heavy breathing, but I liked the characters and the plot was pretty good.

Second book in a row by this author featuring a whiney, verging on TSTL heroine.

I liked the book, but I like the Night Huntress series a lot more. I thought that the romance between Denise and Spade seemed a little abrupt. There was less building up to it. Jeaniene Frost probably knew (or had planned) that the Night Huntress World books would each be stand alone books that only enhance the original series. This book did successfully fill my time while I am waiting for Night Huntress #5.

I've seen some reviews that don't like the way that Cat is in this book, and I can agree with that. She doesn't seem like herself. With that note, however, this story is not told from Cat's (or Bones') point of view (1st or 3rd person). I knew that they were going to make and appearance in the story and I was looking forward to seeing them from someone else's perspective. What did Spade or Denise think about Bones and Cat's relationship? While we did get that a little I think that circumstances were a little to tense (story wise) for Spade or Denise to sit there and contemplate Cat and Bones. I can forgive that because it's not a Cat and Bones story, it's just told in their world and they make an appearance.

Something else I would've liked to have seen would be a scene between just Cat and Denise. The whole scene where Bones talks to Denise about her ideas of changing (or not)into a vampire would have been nice coming from Cat who (as we know from Destined for an Early Grave) just became a full fledged vampire (even though she is still uniquie with that too). Cat could give her reasons to Denise for why she did what she did although I did like what Bones had to say on the matter. Anyway, it would have been nice to have a true friendship moment between Cat and Denise since we are told (more than once in both series) that Denise is "Cat best friend".

The storyline / plot itself was nicely done. I like fresh idea (in the Night Huntress series) of Demons. We hadn't really touched on that topic in the series at all. Night Huntress has been mainly about Vampires / Ghouls with other creatures (ghosts) floating in and out at random. It was nice to see that change.

As far as the characters go, I liked Spade from the Night Huntress series, I thought in that series he seemed really mysterious. I didn't really expect him to turn out to be the character he ended up being in this story (if that even makes sense), but I still liked him. Denise on the other hand we didn't really see that much of in the Night Huntress books, but I liked her enough. I liked that she was a strong-willed heroine not willing to be all pouty and sad, at times though I thought that she was too rash with her decisions. She liked to make decisions before she knew the whole story as it were.

Another thing that I liked about the book was getting to see where Cat and Bones were in their lives. I liked that it took place after the events in Detined for an Early Grave. It was nice to see that they were both ok because that book (if you've read it) really sent me for an emotional rollercoaster when it came to those two.

I know that she's written Mencheres story but I don't know if I will buy that one. What worked here is that I like / wanted to get to know more about Spade and Denise. I don't know if I want / need to get to know more about Mencheres. The only way I would probably read that one is if Bones and Cat made and appearance in it as well. But I like that I have that option. Theses stories will not effect the plotline going in the main series.
