Returned audiobook at around 20% (?) completion - the audiobook is 25+ hours, I’m studying for the bar exam right now and don’t have the energy to get into a long book right now. There were 13 people waiting for the audiobook as well so I figured I would return instead of holding onto it! It seemed like a good book, I may try to read a hard copy in the future.

Pensé que el libro me iba a costar; que iba a luchar para terminarlo; abandonarlo por días, retomarlo, leer unas pocas páginas y volverlo a abandonar. Pero no fue así. Son casi 700 páginas pero tenía que obligarme a soltarlo para poder ir a la facultad o ponerme a estudiar para los parciales, y no esperaba esto para nada cuando lo empecé.
Amé la historia, súper oscura. Al principio no entendía mucho, pero mientras más pasaban las páginas, más clara se iba haciendo la imagen y me gustó mucho como se fueron revelando las cosas.
Me encantaron los personajes, son bastante complejos y todos cometen acciones, como mínimo, cuestionables para conseguir lo que quieren.
Hubo momentos en los que leía de noche y me hacía sentir ansiosa.
No soy de leer mucho terror, pero voy a leer todo lo que saque esta mujer.

Meticulously plotted and the ending delivered. I felt the book dragged a bit and I found some parts a little confusing. But I admire how ambitious Enríquez was with this novel in terms of scope and structure.

This book had such an interesting narrative structure. I loved that we only had limited information and had to piece together puzzle and even still there were questions remaining.
Covering 30 years of history, even if it’s just the history of one family is such a heavy undertaking and Enriquez has done it masterfully. The real horror of the novel to me was the casual cruelty of the world in which it exists. The way in which the the ubiquitous violence is more or less accepted by the characters is jarring and horrifying.
A lot of the subject matter, especially anything to do with children and the constant gaslighting of some the characters made it excruciatingly difficult to get through - but I guess that just means the author achieved her goals.
Overall it felt like a novel I needed to read, but will not be revisiting.
