Dudo entre 4 o 3'5 tan solo porque estilísticamente me ha decepcionado un poco. Me gusta cómo está escrito, me ha encantado la historia, pero me ha fallado muchísimo el ritmo. La primera mitad (los primeros 3/4) son lentos de una forma que no me ha molestado. He disfrutado de saber muchos detalles innecesarios y a la vez mantener muchas incógnitas. Estaba contenta con el ritmo al que algunas se iban resolviendo (muy poco a poco, sin que lo esperase). Y entonces llega el último cuarto del libro y parece que a Enríquez le entra prisa: todo se empieza a resolver rápido, y el ritmo frenético que al principio me resultaba interesante me empezó a cansar. ¿Elección estilística o ganas de terminar la historia y contarte qué es qué, dejar algunos hilos abiertos, y pasar a otra cosa?
Qué rabia.
Aclaro que mi decepción con el final no es con lo que pasa, ni siquiera con que algunas cosas queden sin resolver, sino con la sensación de que está apresurado. El libro es largo y, si iba a ser una historia que arrastrase un poco la trama, hubiese preferido que lo hiciera de manera más consistente, incluso si eso exigiese alargarlo 200 páginas más.

read with Sam and this one feels hard to summarize! pitched to me as magical realism, with much more ordered fantastical elements than that genre would contain, and most firmly in the literary horror camp. set over several turbulent decades in Argentina, this book takes its time to build a world where violence is both supernatural and political, where people are disappeared because of state terrorism and hidden cults. I won’t lie, you’ll spend a lot of the book wondering what these darker powers are up to exactly, and the end leaves with many questions still lingering in the air, but the writing had me hooked, and the fact that there’s so much space for looming dread makes the pointedly scary moments all the more effective. the imagery is visceral - claws, eyelids, migraine auras, scars, bones, heat - and the undertone very dark - torture, abductions, abuse in the name of protection - and these things are rooted as much in class and state violence as they are in dark and demanding magic, which makes for a complicated and compelling genre novel.

A haunting and rich story, filled with characters that stick with you. The horror was well done and the structure of the novel created an intrigue that lasted until the end. Loved the interweaving of supernatural elements with the real violent history of Argentina during the novel’s time period.
