Librazo!

| Plot and Structure | 4 | Clean and well developed. Clearly well thought out, with interesting timelines. I hated the pacing of this book, however, with the first 90% feeling incredibly slow.
| Characterization and Dialogue | 3 | Main characters were fine, dialogue was okay. There were a lot of characters to remember, most not incredibly distinctive. While the main characters are interesting, morally grey, the writing did nothing to make me like or care about them.
| Themes | 4 | Quite a bit of ruminating. Touching mainly on generational trauma and what bad things you might do to protect the ones you love. Lots of political commentary as well and I wish I had been more knowledgeable about history of Argentina coups to appreciate it more.
| Style | 5 | Classic. Very interestingly written, I liked getting different perspectives and parts of the story from different timelines.
| Originality | 4 | Original take on familiar grounds. Interesting and creepy take an occult and magic that I haven't seen anything quite like it.
| Addictiveness | 0 | Forced myself to read for book club. It really felt like a slog for me to get through this; the story and characters were not intriguing enough to make the slow pacing worth it.
| Re-readability | 0 | Definitely will never read again, I don't think there was enough of a plot here to make any part of this enjoyable to go through again.
| Threshold Quality | 0 | Not my cup of tea. I wouldn't read any book this length by this author again. I am considering reading her short stories since that may solve the pacing issue I had. I get why people would really love this, it is just not for me.
| Diversity | 4 | Multiple areas of diversity. Good character variety, female villains, bi and poly romances
| Vibes | 5 | Immaculate. Dark, creepy, unsettling, well written and described.
| Average | 2.9 |

Tomé más del tiempo esperado para poder terminar el libro. Personalmente toma temas difíciles de leer que hicieron que necesitara pausas entre capítulos. En general me encantó el universo y las leyes mágicas que se construyeron para la historia.

The popularity of this book is what drew me to it but tbh it was rough. I wish I had known more about Argentina’s military dictatorship and history before starting as I’m sure I was missing context, though having a very base understanding of military dictatorships and genocide made it not hard to assume some elements. I am particular about my horror though and the body horror was exceptionally gruesome and difficult to get through. This feels like a book in two parts, the second half adding more context to the overall story. Check the trigger warnings before starting, and if you know little about Argentina’s military dictatorship I might suggest doing some research first to understand the context in which this story is set as I wish I had.
