I was recommended this book by my 8th grade English teacher. I had confided in her that my life was hard at the moment because I was dealing with my alcoholic father. He had relapsed yet again and was refusing to be sent to rehab. She handed me this book and said, "Don't ask any questions, just read. Don't say anything to me about it until you're done." I finished the book in about three days and cried through just about the entire thing. I have never related to a fictional character in a book (or movie) more than I did with Hayley Kincaid. Her struggles with her father literally mirror my own in almost every way. She loves him more than life itself, yet there is a small part of her who wishes she didn't have to be the one taking care of him all the time. Laurie Halse Anderson took my feelings about my dad--the unconditional love, the exhaustion, the sorrow, the constant worry--and published them in The Impossible Knife of Memory. Laurie, if you see this, I just want to thank you for giving me this gift. I felt seen and heard. Your book is my comfort read. I don't think I can ever truly express how grateful I am to have it.
