This is a long book (and only half the story, because it's really 1/2 a book - need to read Judas Unchained to see how the story ends).
It took a while to get into it, but I really started to enjoy it as things moved along. And then the cliffhanger! I thought I was going to skip to another short book for my next listen, but I might have to jump right into the next 41 hours of this story.
There are a lot of individual characters and story arcs that weave together as you progress through the story. If that's something you don't care for this is probably not the book for you.

I really enjoyed this book. Lots of detail, moved at a good pace !
Massive space opera that runs over a thousand pages and is only the first half of a duology. This book is epic, with multiple plots that cover political intrigue, interaction between a variety of aliens, more than a few murders requiring investigation, activity on dozens of planets, the creation of a space navy, thousands of invading space aliens and much, much more. It's not easy to be interested in all the plots and things don't really get moving until the last third of the book but it was good enough for me to want to continue into the next book (when I have a big chunk of time to devote to it). Recommended if you like space opera and have lots of time, though I feel I've been spoiled by SA Corey's offerings.

If you liked Game of Thrones, this is the SciFi version of the series. The author is a world builder, he takes up pages to explain the small details. If you like that type of book this will be a good read for you. If you like fast pasted, jump from action to action... this isn't the book for you.
this is the start to one of my favorite Sci-Fi series of all time! just finished the whole series for the second time, I highly recommend this for anyone who likes Sci-Fi. I would classify the series as - far future, space opera, hard Sci-Fi......
It's not often that you can say you read a novel over one thousand pages long. Up until Pandora's Star the longest book I had read was probably A Game of Thrones. At first I drew some parallels between them. Both are truly epic in their scale. Both make you keep track of dozens of characters and locations. Despite all this awesomeness Hamilton doesn't pull it off as well as Martin. There are chunks which could have easily been removed, and some that could have been more elaborate.
In the end I really enjoyed. I'm much more of a science fiction fan than a fantasy fan. I love the sequence describing the Commonwealth process for discovering and exploring new planets. I love how they make communication with aliens incredibly difficult for the humans. I love the themes of genetic engineering and immortal life.
I think I'll have to take a breather before diving into the second installment of this series, but if you really like science, science fiction, or both then do yourself a favor and put this on your reading list.

Much more broad than it is deep, this is TV-ready space opera with lots of moving (but interchangeable parts).
It was a fun ride for the plot and light genre mashup of detective fiction, conspiracy theory, military sci-fi, classic exploration mystery sci-fi, and bits of political commentary. Unfortunately, nothing is resolved until the equally-long sequel, and that novel isn't quite as good.
Pandora's Star has a lot in common with The Expanse novels and Altered Carbon, both for better and for worse.
