I really wanted to like this book, the world is very rich and the story is full of interest. However the pacing drags horribly, it feels like it uses 95% of the book to complete the character development that usually would take the first half of the book. Having said that I think I'm invested enough to read the sequel...

This was the 1st book I read by Peter F. Hamilton and in my humble opinion one of his best.

Highly imaginative, well written, interesting story and I literally couldn't put it down. Despite it's length.

I was on a holiday to New Zealand when the sequel came out, "Judus Unchained", and bought it at the arrival airport.

Big mistake as I couldn't stop reading it also and spent the first 2 days of my holiday reading it, much to the annoyance of my wife :-)

Thoroughly recommended!

This author has a rare talent,i read this and half the time i was hooked and the other half i was thinking 'what-the-hell'. I have three main problems:

The author seems to have spent much of his time writing dialogue that has absolutely no impact and could have been said in a quarter of the words.

There are so many subplots and characters; there are so many but only pop up every ten or so chapters, you wonder who they are and have to read back blindly just to jog your memory.

And finally, the lack of detail on gadgets. The author presents you with plenty of gadgets, e.g E-butler, but never describes them or gives you any notion of what they are.

Nonetheless, I found myself reading always reading on because i just wanted to see what would happen next... It's a rare skill.

I swear I've rated this before. ANYWAYS. This is my 2nd (3rd?) read through of this book (and series) and it still stands up. The depth of detail in the universe, and the characters is excellent, as is the overall story. The characters are very human, and the aliens are *very* alien, which I appreciate. The tech is silly but well thought out, and I enjoy that facet as well. Also interstellar trains, so there's that.

Gosh - I’d forgotten how convoluted Space operas could be. Some of it was interesting. Some of it incredibly dull build up. I’m interested to see how all this world building shakes out!

It also took me forever to read, this book is a behemoth.

I waited until I finished Judas Unchained before reviewing the first of the saga.

Wow. Just wow. I can't even imagine the amount of planning that went into this series. It's masterfully built. It doesn't all make sense at first. You often have the thought of "wait another character what??" but I promise the saga all comes together. I feel infinitely satisfied having just finished Judas Unchained and I don't want to leave this massive cast of characters behind.

I think what I find most impressive about the book is the world. You genuinely feel like "yeah, this is believable as our future." It's crazy and futuristic, but you can see how it's all rooted in what humans do/want/enjoy now (probably with a heavy western slant). All the characters are informed by this world in ways that make sense. No one feels out of character within the context of the world and the characterization Hamilton builds for them. Sure, it can feel sci-fi word heavy at times and you need to reread a couple paragraphs to get your brain back on board, but it's just so rewarding that it's fully worth the extra few minutes here and there.

BRB immediately buying physical copies of this saga
