This book is a combination of multiple fairly good stories. However, even though the book is quite long, none of the primary stories actually comes to a conclusion. Hopefully the sequel is where the stories end, but after investing time and effort in this first volume one will probably have to double that time and effort with only a hope for a satisfying ending, no guarantee. There are plenty of good ideas. Perhaps the stories could be separated in a way that would make a good series of stories each contained in a single book, but if not then both volumes of this set should be published as a single book. At least the reader would know how long the story is. Another option would be to drop some of the stories or relegate them to minor background stories with less detail. Well, those options were not the choice of the author or the publisher. Maybe someday I will read the sequel.
I really liked this book and will start Judas Unchained soon. While this book was too long and had too much filler or detail, that filler is well done. Some of the scenes, I'll remember for a long time.

Reread via audiobook in the car. A fun, sprawling, messy space opera. Ends on a cliffhanger (I forgot about that!).
Finally sat down to read this book after it sitting on my shelf for a couple years. one I cracked page 100 I could not put it down! This is a densely packed book, rich in characters and details about the universe contained. Should be high up on any sci-fi reader's list!
I'll be blunt - the first half is amazingly confusing. That said, the first half is quite awesome in the grand scheme of things. It lets you be a part of so many stories that slowly wrap together. It's a great process of becoming part of the universe.
