I did this as an audiobook and the narrator was excellent, as was the story.

I will always reread this book. This is my favorite book of 2021 by Angie Thomas. I want everyone to read this book and reread it ad many times as they can and love it like I do.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Angie Thomas has done it again & I’m thankful for her pulling me out of my slump & back into reading.

When I found out this was about Starr’s father, I absolutely estatic and rushed to 2nd & Charles to get it. I wish I could read even more about what happens , even though what happens after Concrete Rose is self explanatory.

I won’t share any spoilers , but I will say this was an amazing read and I wasn’t let down :)

5/5 - Easy and heartwarming read.

Maverick is such a great main character that I empathized with a lot. I hope nothing bad happens to him in the next book.

I found the plot really intriguing. It's just about a young guy who's figuring out what he wants with his life while also handling being a parent at a very young age. I can't wait to see more of this explored in the next book.

I would read it again. It was soo good.

“Leaving him here, that be the hardest part. My life still going on and he just something for grass to grow on top of.”

5 stars to the amazing Concrete Rose!! I loved it so so much and I need a movie version of it stat! Angie Thomas is an auto buy author for me and this book just solidifies that!

This book was so so good-it made me laugh, cry and smile (usually all within a couple pages) and I literally hugged it when I was done.

This book takes place in Garden Heights about 17-18 years before The Hate U Give and it follows Maverick (Starr’s dad) and his journey into surprise fatherhood at 17. This book deals with parenting, friendship, loyalty, grief, love and heartbreak and it’s written in such a way that you feel all those feelings as Maverick goes through them.

Maverick is probably one of the best characters I’ve read in a book in a bit. I loved his voice and there we so many moments of pure sweetness as he learns how to parent a 3 month old. His struggle with his responsibility to his family and to the gang he was basically born into is central to the book and it weaves really well into him figuring out how to be a good father and a good man.

You don’t have to have read The Hate U Give to read this one, but if you haven’t you really should pick it up, it is also a phenomenal read. I cannot recommend this one enough-you won’t regret picking it up.

A Black high-schooler resolves to become his own man, negotiating masculinity, manhood, love, fatherhood, and violence, while growing up beloved in a neighborhood that is also gang territory. Prequel to The Hate U Give. Excellent.
