I am 2/2 for Angie Thomas. She is now an auto read just like the wonderfully talented Elizabeth Acevedo. Another amazing read about the decisions others have the make when faced with tough decisions in less-than-optimal situations.
”Killing is easy. It’s living after the fact that’s hard.”
“Grief a hell of a burden…however it ain’t an excuse.”
“I believe God is way more merciful than they are.”

I didn't think I could love an audiobook more than The Hate U Give, but Concrete Rose is even better. Reading THUG, I wanted to know more about Starr's parents, and Concrete Rose delivers an emotional wallop from the perspective of Maverick. Brilliantly and evocatively narrated by Dion Graham. Everything is great about this book.
Angie Thomas is going to come under a lot of pressure to continue with more of the Carter family saga. I for one am happy to join the chorus.
Just brilliant.

A great prequel to the Hate U Give! I loved Thomas’ exploration of masculinity. The storyline didn’t grab me as much as her others — maybe a little more externalized conflict than internalized than I prefer, or maybe this book is another victim of my pandemic reading slump — but the decisions Mav had to make were high stakes and complicated, which kept me hooked. I thought the rose metaphor was too heavy-handed, but the thoughts about naming were awesome.
Angie Thomas has done it again, y’all! This prequel to The Hate U Give is the story of Mav Carter (Starr’s dad, for those of you who’ve read the original). I could not put this down, although I should’ve been reading for class tonight.

4.5 rounded up- I didn’t think maverick Carter was someone I would be excited to read about as a POV character, but this prequel does a great job, even if it does feel slightly more 2020s at times than when the book actually takes place...

A prequel to The Hate You Give that gives us deeper insight into the family dynamics and personalities of the series.
As a white reader, I have challenged myself to read more black readers. While this has many sad moments and trials, this is a story of love and overcoming adversity. I loved this book.

Now I finally understand why this book never stays on my shelf. Amazing!!!!
