I loved seeing Marverick's early struggles that's are mentioned in The Hate U Give. It started out great, but I felt like the ending was a bit rushed and unresolved. I thought we'd see how he took the blame for King and all that, but it ended in this like fairy tale, everything's fine vibe instead. Other than the ending, the rest of the book was good.

It is rare to read a sequel, or prequel in this case, that is as good as the first book. Concrete Rose is that book.

Ooof, parts of this story were wrenching and a few times I was on edge wondering what would happen, and then Angie Thomas worked her magic. I was a fan of Maverick from the beginning and eager to learn about his life before The Hate You Give. (As an aside, it seems I read Angie Thomas every two years in March or April.)

While Angie Thomas writes fiction, I think she uses fictional stories to tell stories with some truth to them. And perhaps the most important truth in this story is a life lesson: no matter how many people believe in you, you have to believe in yourself.
