I couldn't put this book down! I thought it was really well done. I especially enjoyed it as an exploration of how individual people have agency within oppressive structures and systems.

I read The Hate You Give by this author years ago and loved it. I was so excited to jump into Maverick’s story. This author has a way of bringing characters to life in such a visceral way. Maverick was tough, kindhearted, and proud. He struggled to survive and support his family. At 17, he was dealt an impossible hand. Watching him struggle, grow, and come into his own was heartbreaking. Especially because of how honest and realistic Maverick’s story was. The plot sucked me in and kept me turning pages. The ending felt very abrupt and left me with questions. It didn’t wrap up the story satisfyingly enough for me.
I’m not quite sure what it is about Angie Thomas’ books, but I have always really enjoyed them and their subject matter (the writing style as well), this book was no exception. Very interesting to learn more about Maverick’s backstory, and actually a pretty solidly funny book.
