It took me a minute to get into this one because I couldn’t remember as much of The Hate U Give as I wished I had. When I re-read this, I’ll definitely re-read The Hate U Give to get some perspective. But once I got into the story, it was amazing, as Thomas’s writing always is. I love the world she created and how it meshed with some of Nic Stone’s characters in a very slick way.

this book is so heartwarming <3

Wow~ I loved this as much as The Hate You Give! Maverick is such a great character and I loved seeing how Maverick and Lisa's relationship began.

Wow Concrete Rose was excellent!!! Angie Thomas is such a brilliant writer!! A must read!!

I listened to the audiobook and oh my goodness the narrator did such an amazing job with making me feel what the characters were feeling. This book gave a lot of insight into why Maverick is the way he is in The Hate U Give and how he came about to be in certain positions. I can’t wait to get a physical copy and reread this!

Angie Thomas - what an icon. This book might have shocked and informed me more than The Hate U Give did, mostly because I found it much less relatable but just as important.
Maverick's life at seventeen is so different from his daughter's and certainly so incredibly different from mine and it was shocking but so insightful to read about his life. He is quite the disaster and while that sometimes threw me off a bit (can any of the people in this book do anything ever with a single thought beforehand?) it all made so much sense.
He does, in a way, life in a different world than Thomas' other protagonists and few of the many burdens on his shoulders were his faults. Racism and societal structures that specifically disadvantage him and his family were made so clear and it hurts to read about it, but there's still something positive, something hopeful in this book. And while that might have been a bit corny, it was still *good* to read about.
The story of a black teen dad who is in a gang and poor and instead of thinking about college has to think about the many dead family members around him is not something you often get to read about. This is a very unique book and while there were a bunch of small things I didn't like as much about it I absolutely think it's a good book.

Thomas, already a bar setter, gets better with every book. I loved every second of this book, read perfectly by Dion Graham. Maverick is one of the realest male-identifying YA characters I've ever read. I KNOW this kid. She's imbued Mav with such depth, heart, and soul that you feel and understand every decision he makes. A knockout.
