While the Mormonism might be subtle or blatant, depending on the reader, the Gospel is on full display in the stories and artwork of this book. The depth of the worldbuilding and 80s references are amazing.

A really fun, quick read with excellent art particularly for people (like myself) with Mormon roots including some fun nods to "mormon folklore." Definitely enjoyable for both current, practicing Mormons or former Mormons like myself!

I LOVE THIS BOOK. The illustrations are delightful, filled with great details and love and attention, drawing on 80s cartoons and action figures and Mormon history and iconography, building a fascinating, compassionate vision of what Mormonism can be. Love the work that Matt does here in using the speculative impulses of science fiction to create a more loving, wonderful world, still filled with tension and drama of great stories. I really appreciated the snap shot nature of the book, having loads of different vignettes that are all set in the world of New Zion, sometimes intersecting with characters and narratives, but each providing a little taste of the world and possibilities that Matt creates. Can't wait to see what he does next and to start working on my own speculative Mormon projects!

I'm not sure what to make of Future Day Saints. It's the length of a children's book, and its stories are appropriate for children, but the references would surely make sense only to an adult steeped in Mormon culture. Granted, that's part of what makes the best of children's literature: it is layered and nuanced. I'm not sure that there's a whole lot of nuance in Future Day Saints -- references to Lia's Power of the Priests, the Othersheep, Hot Drinks, etc, are all very on the nose --, but I do appreciate what FDS is trying to achieve. I love that it asks questions, and that it offers us a vision of what Mormonism could be, and I think that those who have been disaffected by Church leadership and organization might find comfort in this creative work. It's definitely an expansive vision of theology in general and Christ's visit to the Americas in the Book of Mormon in particular: "Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold."

But, I'm left feeling bereft. I expected this to be a lot more of an action-packed X-Men comic. I was pleasantly surprised when it was about making moral decisions. (Also, I loved the "Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief" story, but it also felt like low-hanging fruit...) Future Day Saints is obviously a labor of love, and I wanted more stories. So... I guess I have to wait until the next installment?
