This thriller has one of the most interesting premises that I've really heard of. Martin Gray is a young civil rights lawyer, who beats the high-profile and hugely famous Damon Darrell in a case and is invited by the latter into his inner circle of powerful black men. Taken away on a weekend with them without wives or communication, Martin discovers that they share the desire to reinstate slavery-with white people performing the tasks their ancestors had to as a kind of retribution.

This is a really fascinating premise, and the sections of the book that deal with black American history and the real anger present in the characters were great. However, a lot of the characters weren't particularly nuanced and the writing wasn't...great, the flaws of having read thrillers by people like Gillian Flynn, means that perhaps my expectations in that respect are a bit high. However, Smith is a screenwriter by trade and I could definitely see Forty Acres making a very successful transfer to the screen.

Poorly written and contrived. An intriguing premise that’s ultimately poorly executed. 👎

I had to take time away to process before I could really write down this review.

This book was AMAZING! I love books that pull conflicting emotions out of me. This book did that while still keeping me on an edge of my seat thrill ride. It took me a while to read but that was not because of the writing, but because just the beginning was so intense I knew I needed to give it my undivided attention. When I did finally sit down to read it I read it in a day.
The pacing of the book had my heart beating so fast I had to actually take breaks. That is not a euphemism I put the book down and walked away from it. I told people around me I had to take a break from the book I was reading. Someone asked me what I was reading. I didn't even have the words for them.
I think at it's core though this book really asks some tough questions about history, current life and the future. How do you really make things right after such an abominable, horrible time that was slavery. Honestly sometimes I rooted for both sides. In that way this book really is a mirror to what goes on inside your ind and heart. I was so conflicted and I love that.
Some of the philosophies in the book I have heard before or somewhat similar philosophies. In that way I actually felt that some of the book was missing. I get that it was a long book but it almost felt like there was something that was missing. How could this super secretive society invite this man on the basis of just a few meetings? This of course did not take anything away from the book that I read it just left me questioning.
All the people who recommended it to me no one warned me about the ending. Some of those people were supposed to be my friends (yes I am side-eyeing you).
Smith you have a fan in me for life. I'm already going to the bookstore to order your next book.

I loved this book! It absolutely wrecked my emotions , you went from nervous to heartbreak to elation!!! It asks the ? if v you had a chance to get even with an injustice done to you would you take the opportunity and/or can you handle what that entails???

Started off really good. Then it became super predictable. I was trying to figure out how it rank it. It's around a 2.5 stars. Thrillers aren't for me because I'm rarely thrilled. This subject matter just wasn't for me and I didn't enjoy the writing style as we got further into the story. With this type of plot line it could have been riveting. However, I was left disappointed

Remember when UPN showed conspiracy thriller movies on weekend afternoons like The Pelican Brief or Murder at 1600 or The Firm? And sometimes every couple of months they'd show that batshit Marlon Brando version of Island of Dr. Moreau? This book reminded me of those halcyon days. It was really fun.
