More action! More heat! More death... This book took a different turn than what I was expecting after I finished the first. That may have had something to do with the fact that I thought this was a duology and was surprised with a killer cliffhanger at the end. I kept expecting the story to begin to wrap up, and when it didn't, I wasn't sure what to do with myself. So now I'm on the edge of my seat, and while this wasn't quite as exhilarating as the first installment (unsurprising as a middle book), it did leave me anxious for the next one!

I feel like the story really picks up in this book and I liked it a lot more than the first book in this series (although not quite to the extent that I love the books in the Lux series). I feel like there was a lot more action in this book along with more reveals and questions answers as well as a little more Daemon Black (I know this isn't his series but I just love it whenever he shows up). In this book, Evie learns more about her past and who or what she truly is, and I feel like her relationship with Luc grows stronger throughout the book. The book also reminded me how ruthless Jennifer L. Armentrout can be, and unless you are the main character, you're not guaranteed to be safe. And, if you are the main character, the author is definitely going to put you through the ringer, and I kind of love it. I do kind of wish we could get a bit of Luc's point of view because I think he's such an interesting character, and sometimes I would like to know what is going on in his head. Overall, I felt like this was a really solid book, and I'm happy that I got around to rereading this series.
I liked this one so much more then The Darkest Star. And just like all middle books it ends on a cliffhanger that has you reaching for the next one.
I’ve really enjoyed the world development. It feels real and possible. And really illustrates human foibles.
I’ve also really enjoyed the character development of Evie. She’s been put through the ringer and is one strong cookie that really does need time to deal with her emotions.
I’m personally struggling with how young they are. Like Luc and the things he’s done at the age he’s done them. It’s just a bit hard for me to imagine and comprehend. But it is what it is. And it’s not enough to ruin a good series.

Predictable, as a YA book usually is, but still a fun read if you don't think about the logic and major plot holes. Looking through the reviews Amelia's sums up my main issues I had with this book. I did love the parts where Evie goes all bad ass assassin and takes out all these guys, even though it seems EXTREMELY unrealistic.
I also cringed so hard when there was suppose to be this steamy romance scene between Evie and Luc but it's Halloween and Evie is dressed up as a fucking Minion and all I could think about was overalls and yellow tights she is wearing during it. .

Okay, so. This book.
I love it so much, and I want it to be October already so everyone can read it, and I can finally own an actual, physical copy. We can all geek out about it while eating cookie dough and I can tell everyone my favorite quotes because I ~technically~ cannot print any quotes from the galley until I compare them to a final copy, and THERE ARE SOME DOOZIES IN HERE.
I have been waiting for nine months for this book. I could have incubated an entire human baby in the amount of time I’ve been waiting to read this. TECHNICALLY, the book is still a few months away. It is only through the fortune of being a random bookseller that I was able to get my paws on a DRC. Thanks, The Fates/Edelweiss!
One thing you should know about this book: It is long. My DRC clocks in at 393 pages. I have zero complaints about this, however, because it was an all killer, no filler situation. Honestly, my best good buddy Jennifer Armentrout could’ve gone on another 100 or so pages and I still would’ve been okay with the length.
The Burning Shadow picks up right where The Darkest Star left off, so you don’t really have to do a reread of TDS to know what’s going on. The Evie/Nadia conundrum is very much present throughout the book (real or not real?), and the romance is of the slow burn friends-to-lovers variety, which is one of my favorite kinds. There are twists and turns and love and heartbreak and old favorites make cameos. Also, Luc is wonderful and I love him.
Historically, the Lux series ended on some pretty big cliffhangers, so I was very stressed out for the last 90ish pages, because I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop and then I’d be even MORE annoyed because I’d have to wait ANOTHER YEAR to find out what happens next. Everything that happened was already tense and full of foreboding, but it had that extra weight to it because I am on to your game, Jennifer, and I know what you’re going to do to me here. The woman knows how to leave a reader wanting more. There’s also a hint at the title of the sequel! Surprise! I read somewhere that this is going to be a trilogy, but I haven’t been able to get find that info anywhere recently. Part of me doesn’t want to have to wait to know what happens in the end, and part of me wants the Origin series to go on as long as the Lux series did.
Anyway. Please read this when it comes out and then tell me everything you think about it.

This book was great and we were able to see the relationship between Evie and Luc developing whilst Evie begins to find out more about herself and throughout gets more glimpses of some of the memories she'd lost. This book flows so well. I found April to be a great "bad guy" because I really wasn't expecting it to go that way and I loved learning more of the "sickness".
Look, I really wanted to love this book but I found myself just waiting for it to be over. There was so much wasted potential. Really predictable and when there was an exciting development it was handled quickly and cheaply. So many character deaths that it had no impact at all.

I got bored. Hell has frozen over, I dnf'd a JLA novel. *sobs forever*
