This was ok, but I can't really say much more for it than that. It was much too long and repetitive and I was bored for large parts of it. There were also thinly veiled political analogies between unregistered Luxens and undocumented immigrants and I found it a little annoying. There were multiple scenes of the main character yelling at protesters that just kind of felt like wish fulfillment from the author. And I'm not saying that's wrong, but I feel like everything that is wrong in the country comes down to two sides yelling names at each other instead of trying to talk and work things out. It's so unproductive and I get enough of that in real life. I did enjoy getting more Luc, though, and I liked the romance, which is what JLA is always good at. I also liked the cameos from the Lux series. There was more of all the characters I love than the last book had, so that helped make up for some of the boredom.
This book was really fun! After that ending, I can't wait for the next book!

I just know that the next book is called "The Brightest Night"
First of all, I LOVED the first book The Darkest Star when I read it last year. The Lux series will always hold a very special place in my heart, cause it's the first series I read completely in English and fell in love with. Therefore I was so stoked to hear that we would be back in the world of Luxen/Origin etc. While it was good to see all these characters I love so dearly return in the first book, I felt like the story lost its sparks in the sequel. I don't know how to describe it other than that I wasn't as excited for the story as I could have been.
The first 65% of the book were boring. Evie has like an identity crisis and some people die, but overall nothing major is happening. So for that part I would give 3 stars. And from there on everything happens so fast and the story kept me on my seat, cause I wanted to know what was happening next. For the last 35% I'd give 4.5 Stars.
So now some spoiler talks, cause it's me and I can't write reviews without spoiling the plot or scenes that I liked/disliked. :D
I love Luc! He's such a funny dork with his weird t-shirts and surprises and his weirder sense of humor, but I love it. The way he loves Evie is just super cute. The scene where they were dancing in Luc's room on Halloween was soooo cute!!! The way he always reassures Evie that it doesn’t matter that she can't remember the old Nadia, she should just be herself. Luc is the definition of the hero who is only soft for their love interest and literally everyone else can die. I love this mentality in books, but honest to god I could slapped Luc for wanting to kill Daemon. Yes, you can kill the rest of the population if that means protecting Evie. I approve that. But hell no, if you touch just one hair on Daemon and leave Katy widowed and the unborn baby fatherless. Then I'm coming to kick your ass. Daemon and Katy are my babies and if something happens to them during the spin off series then I don't know what I would do. So JLA you better not harm them in any way!
I was sad that Kent had to die. I liked that guy. He was funny and laid-back and overall good guy. I didn't expect him to die that early… his death hurted me more than Evie's mom death. It's sad for Evie cause she lost her last family member, but it's for the best for the rest. Her mom did so much damage working for Daedalus that I'm glad she can't do worse. Like can it even get worse than turning your daughter in some Luxen/Arum hybrid mutant ?
The plotwist at the end where Jason Dasher is still alive and the head of this super old secretive society that creates Luxen/Arum hybrids. No surprise from me. What I've learned from reading supernatural series: If you don't see the dead body and it was not burned, then the person is still breathing, hiding somewhere and just waiting to fuck shit up.
Even though, this was a letdown compared to The Darkest Star, I'm still looking forward to the next book because I love JLA's world building and her characters. Hopefully until then I can find the excitement again.

“No, you’re the Burning Shadow and he’s the Darkest Star, and together, you will bring about the brightest night.”
This book was a lot slower than the first, and I was a little lost in some parts. The plot twists were more confusing than satisfying when revealed. Either way, I still really love the relationship between Luc and Evie, and I am still patiently waiting for October 20th. I always come into a 2nd book expecting it to not be as good as the 1st, so I was not really let down by this book. I just was not super impressed with it. The ending though... I won't spoil it, but boy was I not expecting that.
what in the fucking world? i loved this even more than the first?! the first one was amazing, loved it, but this!!! HOLY!!! i don’t approve w that cliffhanger. i cant wait 253 days. nope.
I sure as hell didn't see that coming. Does this look like a sensible place to stop at? Newsflash: doesn't feel like that at all to this reader here
Finish this a couple days ago and all I have to say is
WHEN IS BOOK 3 COMING OUT
