Amazing book. I loved it; it had me in suspense the whole time. This story was unlike anything else I have read before, and when you pretty much read only fantasy like I do, that’s hard to find. The ending was not expected at all. I really thought we could trust the people who claimed to be allies. I am really impressed with Addie Thorley’s world building and writing skills. This was the first book I have read of hers and I can’t wait to read more. I am excited for the next books and the continuation of this gripping adventure.

I was not happy that this was not a standalone. I have owned this book since it was published, and somehow thought it was a standalone. The story was interesting, and the twist was a little predictable, but it was a good book.

Trigger warnings:
Spoilerdisfiguration & scarring, banishment, family estrangement, war themes

I wanted to love this book and I truly did at the start. A gender-bent retelling of The Hunchback of Notre Dam started off gorgeously, with a main character that was her own but with some beautiful parallel scenes drawn from the original story. But, it ends up falling into a fairly typical fantasy YA that lost all the magic I enjoyed in the beginning.

I really found this book to be a fun read, especially for someone who was in a big reading slump for months. I don’t have too strong an opinion on this book except for that I liked it, but it felt like the kind I’ve read many times.

Pros:
+ Enebish is a cool main character
+ The second half of the book is where things go down and it’s pretty great
+ I like the familiarity with the magic system

Cons:
- Again, it feels a bit too reminiscent of other YA fantasies I’ve read
- I wish I knew more about the world but I do think the sequel (or sequels?) will develop on that
- Some parts felt very repetitive, especially Enebish’s thoughts. Like it’s fine if it’s a little repetitive but i feel like i’ve heard the same thoughts throughout the entire book until the last section

I’m looking forward to reading the next book! As I have not read the Hunchback if Notre Dame, I don’t think I’d be able to make the connections with that book. But I’m definitely curious to look into it now!

Oh, another fantasy favorite! The detail, the world building, the MC’s and the fact it's inspired by the Hunchback of Norte Dame ❤️❤️❤️

This is such a beautiful book! This was another highly anticipated read for me being released this year and it did not disappoint!

This story follows a girl who believes she’s a monster and who has to go through this journey and growth to learn that she really is not.

I have to say that if anyone is going to tease or bully Enebish, they’re gonna have to go through me
