I wanted to read this because Hermann Hesse was a big fan of Goethe. I can now see why. It has beautiful descriptions of nature, for one thing. But the main appeal for me is the insights it provides on the human condition. People often minimize or scoff at feelings of infatuation and melancholy, especially in young people. I think this book does a great job expressing just how real, intense, and dangerous these emotions can be. It packs a lot of other interesting thoughts in too.
Some people are going to read this and think that it's a compelling and emotional story, some people are going to think it's too whiney and boring. I'm leaning toward the latter, though credit where credit is due, The Sorrows of Young Werther had a lot of innovations.
Didn’t get on so well with Werther’s self-pity though young Goethe has his moments...
Preface and history more interesting than the book itself, I gave up!
