dark sad slow-paced

Good audio books are hard to come by, and occasionally I down-load books for my mp3 player that I would never read on paper thinking I'll be fine listening to it. I can just stop that silly business now. I know this is supposed to be a classic and that there was a huge fuss upon its publication in some earlier century. I don't care. I did not like it one iota. Oh the melodrama! Oh the pain! Oh just go and shoot yourselfer already Werther.

Poor Werther. As a modern reader, he comes across as desperately unlikeable. I spent the book constantly wishing that I could tell him to man up. And Lotte, what an irritating, wet blanket of a woman.

I do wonder if these characters came across in the same way in the 1700s, and I suspect that they would have been seen much more sympathetically back in those days. Werther as the romantic, moral man, who cannot pursue his love, but cannot leave her be either, and Lotte as a perfect gentlewoman, looking after her brothers and sisters, tending to her husband, and playing the piano and dancing so well.

However, despite my utter dislike of the two main characters, I actually really enjoyed this book. Some of the parts of the book where Werther is not sighing, and weeping, and kissing a thousand kisses, are very beautifully described. A lot of the passages are very thought provoking, and some parts tend to the philosophical. I was also interested in some of the details of 17th century life, and was surprised at how accessible I found these.

So, I did enjoy the book, even though I spent some of the time wondering if Werther was going to keep whinging on for a lot longer. I can really see how this one is a classic, as it is still so relatable to those going through a situation of unrequited love, or for angsty teens. Not one I'll be rushing to recommend though.

A work of suffocating and brimming with profound emotion. Some have called it a dangerous piece, and I totally agree.
Goethe transforms the deepest sorrow into something magnificent, hauntingly beautiful.

At last, I would like to say: “Dear Werther, love is not the only thing in this world. There are countless other wonders waiting for you to discover.” So sad…
