I am indeed only a wanderer and a pilgrim on the earth. Are you any more than that?

Honestly I didn’t think I would be so affected by the issues of a privileged white man but here we are. This is such a singular look into the mind and thoughts of someone who allowed his feelings to completely take over his mind. I think we’re all in danger of being this person, whether it’s through our relationships to our work, an unrequited love, or even in friendship. It’s good to feel and think deeply but there has to be some substance behind it all, or what’s even the point?
It helped that I read this in Frankfurt (Goethe's hometown), and I don't expect this will be everyone's cup of tea. In fact, I think most modern readers over the age of 25 will take it as overly dramatic, even ridiculous love story at times. But given the historical context and influence of this book in early 19th century Europe, I found it to be immensely rewarding on numerous levels beyond just entertainment. Certain passages are stunningly beautiful and resonate deeply, quite a feat considering it was originally written in German over 200 years ago. If Romanticism is something you connect with or like, this is one of the works that you absolutely must read.
It 19s a great, great book, beautifully written and with such truths inside that make you tremble. No wonder one can emphasize so well with Werther, even if he shows more spirit and intelligence than most humans. His letters are full of life and feeling. There is much to discuss about this book, but I am far too tired now and I 19ll live it at that: some tears burst out at the final pages.
