A cool concept, but poorly executed. Awkward metaphors, too many weird and irrelevant details included. Do I really care that the main character uses castille soap? Syrah was also largely unrealistic and unsympathetic. Too whiny, too all or nothing, not a lot of realistic internal dialogue. Most of the interactions between any of the characters were stilted.
I'm always curious when I have this sort of reaction to a book by an author that has been nominated for a bunch of awards. Am I just being overly critical? Are the people nominating for and giving awards not being critical enough?

Years later Syrah is still chasing the flames that took her family from her. Back in her old haunt, she weeds her way into an underground full of people protecting nature and much like humanity some of them want to fix their problems with violence and leading that war was Romelo, warped by his own need for vengeance.
A good story, easy to read and I had fun with it

Syrah takes up a job opportunity at Sequoia National Park where years before her parents died and her brother dissapeared. Newly appointed fire chief she wants to protect it from the fires that ravaged her childhood. When a fire breaks out she finds herself thrust in a secret hidden world of another race who protects nature behind the scenes. One side is under the command of the benevolent caretaker Keeper while another sect believes they must wage war against humanity to save the Earth as they know it. Caught between loyalty and what is right Syrah finds herself forced to choose between loyalty and what she believes is right.
First off, why was this set in 2042? Nothing changed in this society at all and it could have been 2024 with no changes made. Second off, Syrah is like 30 and never reads or feels like it in the story. Third off, the worldbuilding was lacking in this one and the characters didn't seem to mesh well with this story at all. I'm bummed about this one because I thought it would be something I'd like but it was unengaging and boring instead. 2/5

I’m sad to say this book wasn’t for me. I found the storytelling too sterile and BORING. The premise of a Black female fire chief with magical realism + environmental message + finding a lost sibling interested me. But the execution couldn’t keep my attention. Maybe this would work better as a screenplay? Also, the story is set in the year 2042, but you didn’t see any technological advances or changes in society at a macro level. It felt like 2024, to be honest.
Syrah, the main character, had a traumatic event take place as a child that sent her to foster care and bred her desire to firefight and love of botany. She had some issues with stifling her emotions and appearing unemotional to others. I don’t think she was a bad character necessarily, but I wasn’t compelled to see her development/follow her journey.
Also, the love interest felt shoe-horned in. A clear HR violation too. Go girl, give us nothing. I can’t verify if Alvaro was really married or not because I don’t care enough to read on. In hindsight, syrah was probably just latching on to the one person who showed her kindness. It looks like she maybe a Tree Love Interest (Giant) too(?)

I wanted to love this book so much, unfortunately it felt very anticlimactic and a lot of back and forth. The only likable character in the book was Dane.
