Overall the book was fun and fresh perspective, incorporated nature education which I love , action and moments of reflection. A few transitions were a difficult to follow and felt rushed. I would  start in and have to go back a page to reread thinking, nope we just jumped to a new part . The same goes for some of the plot. There were times I wanted a bit more explanation. Conversely there were other times I had too much  irrelevant detail making the story go a bit slower.

Slow paced almost to excruciation but also a quick read. The Canopy Keepers is contradictory and difficult to digest.

This book was ok, I didn’t enjoy the writing style but that’s not the reason I gave it one star. I didn’t like it because it placed all of the blame on forest fires on individual actions and people while not mentioning the fact that some of the largest fires in history were caused by companies. This places the blame on individuals rather than the systemic causes of Global Warming.

I enjoyed this book. I have a hard time when I don’t love decisions the main character makes, and there were definitely times Syrah frustrated me.

It had an interesting premise, so that was good. My first hiccup was when the main character, after years of battling her adoptive parents, the system, other firemen, etc. as a black woman - the moment she becomes chief at her dream location, she makes a mistake. That part was understandable. What seemed to me 100% out of character was throwing all those years and all that effort away by quitting despite repeated attempts by everyone to get her to understand it happens.

I decided to read on anyway. Then I hit the second - after joining in as a volunteer during a fire in the park of a famous sequoia, she is kidnapped by supernatural creatures helping nature. When they let her go, she stumbles back to where she had parked her car when she first came to help. A ranger she doesn't know stops her, tells her the park is closed, and asks what was she doing there. She said she'd been jogging. He lets her go... A woman who comes out of a fire-devastated area that took more than a day to put out is out jogging in it? Oh, come on!

So while I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, that was enough for me. :(
